A British Foreign Office official has reiterated London’s commitment to opposing a boycott of Israel.

Tobias Ellwood has in a recent tweet to an Israeli official said he did not believe in the merits of introducing boycotts “when we are trying to get people back to the [negotiating] table,” RT reported.

He also reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to Israel and opposition to its boycotts.

The statement comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned a recent vote by the UK National Union of Students (NUS) to boycott goods from Israel.

The NUS passed a motion to boycott Israeli goods in solidarity with the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against the regime.

Now Alan Hart, London-based author, researcher and journalist, says, “The British government’s stated justification, for what we might call boycotting the boycott, is that sanctions won’t be helpful to getting the peace process going.”

“Now that’s complete and utter nonsense and the government knows well because there is no prospect of getting a real peace process going,” Hart told Press TV on Sunday.

He also said, “By allowing Israel to go on defying international and suppressing the Palestinians, all of our governments are by default complicit in Israel’s crimes.”

BDS supporters say pressure on Israel will force it to change its policy, and allow for the creation of a Palestinian state. The movement has been gaining momentum in recent months.

Last October, a majority of British MPs passed a non-binding motion to recognize Palestine as an independent state.
