Busilvex and Velcade, which are produced in the US by Ben Venue, are used in Britain to treat bone marrow cancer.

The number of affected batches was unknown but a recall was issued as a precautionary measure, according to the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP).

The drugs regulator said alternative suppliers would prevent a shortage of the drug and said patients should continue their treatment.

The warning came along with a recall for a third drug, Vidaza, which is used to treat some forms of leukaemia but affected batches are not in the UK.

A breast cancer drug, Caelyx, which is also manufactured by Ben Venue, will not be prescribed to new patients to preserve stocks.

Patients are advised to talk to their GP if they have any questions.
