THE Prime Minister is set to hold a video conference call with European Union leaders to discuss the debt crisis this afternoon.
The conference comes ahead of next week’s G20 summit in Mexico and will include German chancellor Angela Merkel, French president Francois Hollande, Italian PM Mario Monti, Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy, European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso and European Council president Herman van Rompuy.
Tensions within the eurozone are increasing ahead of the Greek elections on Sunday and Chancellor George Osborne has already warned to prepare for a Greek euro exit.
Mr Cameron’s official spokesman said the call was a long-scheduled opportunity for the leaders to discuss the issues on the G20 agenda.
Top of the agenda is likely to be the crisis in the eurozone and the re-run elections scheduled for June 17 in Greece.
Asked about the elections – triggered by the failure to form a government in Athens after polls last month – Mr Cameron’s spokesman said: “It is a matter for the Greek people and clearly they have to go through their democratic processes.
“But we need to see an end to the uncertainty which is damaging the European economy and damaging our economy.”
He added: “We need to see action to deal with the problems in the eurozone sooner rather than later.
“The Prime Minister has talked on a number of occasions of the chilling effect the situation in the eurozone is having on our economy and the global economy.”
