US health regulators have approved a weight-loss pill for the first time in 13 years.
Belviq, made by Arena Pharmaceutical, can be used by obese or overweight adults with at least one condition.
The drug achieved only modest results in clinical studies, helping people lose on average about 5% of their body weight.
Belviq was rejected in 2010 because of concerns over tumours that developed in animals tested with the drug.
After San Diego-based Arena resubmitted its application with more data, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found little risk of tumours in humans using the drug.
Side effects
The medication is expected to launch in 2013.
Belviq is designed to block appetite signals in the brain, making patients feel fuller with smaller amounts of food.
Belviq is not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing
It has been approved for use in obese adults with a body mass index of 30 or greater.
The drug can also be used by overweight adults with a BMI of 27 or greater if they have at least one other condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol.
The FDA warned that Belviq is not for women who are pregnant or nursing.
With US obesity rates approaching 35% in adults and associated healthcare costs on the rise, many doctors have urged health regulators to give the green light to new weight-loss treatments.
But the agency has set high standards for such medication after safety problems with previously popular weight-loss drugs.
The so-called fen-phen combination had to be pulled from the market in 1997 after being linked to heart valve damage.
In a statement, the FDA said Belviq did not appear to carry the same risks.
However, known side effects of Belviq do include depression, migraine and memory lapses.
The FDA-approved label says the drug should not be used for more than 12 weeks if a 5% weight loss does not occur.
Arena will be required to conduct six studies after marketing the drug, including a study on the drug’s effect on long-term heart health.

Right lets get some truth saying and logic going here shall we. First of all would you rather be fat or would you rather be slimmer but have Cancer do deal with? I think you would rather be fat. Now the problem with the weight gain is that the Spleen is no longer functioning correct and must be restored which can only be achieved with homoeopathic, herbal and acupuncture methods along with certain foods. There is no other way to restore the Spleen. You must understand that your Spleen also controls your muscles, mouth, stomach and pancreas. Why do you think overweight people are more prone to both cancer and diabetes? These are both pancreatic dysfunctions connected deeper with the Spleen function.
What all synthetic drugs do is attack the organ balances and eventually destroy function especially of the Kidneys and Liver. I suggest you study a Physicians Desk Reference to understand how bad all these drugs really are. How can one improve when one is continually increasing the non-balancing of the organs this way. So they tell you this drug has caused tumours in animals but its okay and safe for you to use. Then they sneak in that further tests to check Heart problem side-effects will go on. Well shouldn’t this be known before its passed?
When one has weight issues they usually always have Kidney and Liver problems, the three go hand in hand your see. If the Spleen is dysfunctioning then the balancing of the Kidneys will fall leading to issues with both the Liver and Heart. If the Liver dysfunctions then Heart and Spleen problems may arise and so forth. In order to remove the weight the Spleen has to be working in order to process the water of the body properly and remove excess water out of the system. Until this restoration takes place then you will suffer with weight. If someone takes a pill which may over work the Spleen then you will end up stripping weight but unfortunately damage the Spleen further to where serious damage takes place such as what we see with the mice. This drug above seems to be affecting the Liver most likely with heat and also hurting Kidney function which is damaging the memory.
Seek a good alternative practitioner and stay away from doctors and big pharma run by The Worshipful Company of Apothecaries. What you want to do is stay well away from sweeteners, soy, msg, vegetable oils. You do not want any of those agents which cause thyroid or endocrine dysfunctions. Make sure you are getting your essential fatty acids and saturated fats. A big problem today with weight gain other than vegetable oils and sweeteners is the loading up with carbs rather than saturated fats. Did you know that these sugars are converted to saturated fats in the body? So why are you scared of saturated fats? Is it because of propaganda specialists out to hinder your health and make a buck or two in the process? You are purposely being force fed poisons to bring on these illnesses which aids population control, profiting and of course population reduction agendas such as the one by the Club of Rome.
