Madrid, 11 October 2011 The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Trinidad Jiménez, today met with the Prime Minister of Quebec, Jean Charest, at the Palacio de Viana.
The meeting dealt primarily with economic and cultural matters.
Jiménez highlighted the excellent economic relations between Spain and Quebec. The Minister explained that Quebec’s “Plan Nord”, a project that is essential to the development of the northern region of this province over the next 25 years, provides an opportunity for cooperation between companies from Spain and Quebec, especially in the areas of infrastructure, energy and environmental protection.
Trinidad Jiménez and Jean Charest also reviewed cultural relations between Spain and Quebec, where the Spanish language is enjoying a boom. Quebec’s universities have a Spanish section in their language departments. At present, the University of Montreal, which already has a Spanish Resource Centre, is currently being assessed for accreditation as an Associate Centre of the Cervantes Institute.
