MORE than a third of French voters want to dump the euro and return to the franc, a poll revealed yesterday.

A survey found that 36 per cent of voters in the country want France to quit the single currency.

Forty-five per cent of those quizzed by pollsters Ipsos thought the euro “handicaps” the French economy.

And 62 per cent believe the single currency limited their spending power and made them feel poorer.

The survey results, which were published in the national newspaper Le Monde, represent a massive reversal of public opinion in a country that has long been one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the euro.

Vincent Dusseaux, of Ipsos, said: “This idea is gaining traction. It remains a minority opinion, but within some sub-groups it’s the majority view.”

He added: “The criticism of the euro is more present in France than elsewhere.”

The survey polled 941 voting-age individuals by telephone on November 18 and 19. The bulk of French voters saying they wanted a pull-out of the euro were understood to be supporters of the far-right National Front party.

More blue-collar workers also supported a pull-out than did white-collar workers, the survey found.

But France’s finance ministry warned that pulling out of the single currency would be “disastrous” for the country.
