The Israel lobby has played a major role in U.S. elections for decades, says Alison Weir, the president of the Council for the National Interest.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has issued an official statement of “thanks” to President Obama and the Congressional leadership, praising them for “unshakeable” commitment to Israel.
“APAC is one of the most powerful lobbies in the United States and part of its power in the past has come from the fact that most Americans were not even aware that it existed,” Weir said in an interview on Wednesday. “Even today many people are surprisingly unaware of this extremely powerful lobby that lobbies on behalf of Israel,” she added.
Weir, who is also the executive director of If Americans Knew, noted that AIPAC makes sure that both Democratic and Republican parties will “toe the line” and will support Israel.
The Israel lobby also guarantees the flow of “vast amounts of Americans’ tax money” to Israel at a time when America is reeling from a prolonged economic crisis, she pointed out.
Elsewhere in her remarks, she said that AIPAC is assisting Israel’s effort to get Washington to attack Iran.
