US Senator Rand Paul, who is seen as a potential Republican presidential candidate in the 2016 election, says it was “the definition of insanity” for Mitt Romney to start a third White House effort.

According to reports, Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, has told his Republicans that he will make another White House attempt and is contacting potential donors, past aides and lawmakers.

“It’s sort of what Einstein said, that the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result,” Paul told the New Hampshire Journal on Wednesday.

“A couple of months ago he said that he’d had his chance and it was time for somebody new. He was probably right when he said that,” Paul added. “I think we do need somebody and something new.”

Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, told GOP donors in midtown Manhattan in New York City that he was actively weighing another run for president in 2016, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

Romney said unrest overseas and the long-term health of the economy are two reasons that he is considering another campaign.

When one person at the meeting asked Romney if he wanted to be president, he replied, yes, of course.

Earlier this month, former Republican governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee said he was considering a second presidential bid for 2016 after leaving his television program.

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush is another major Republican name considering a run.

Bush announced last month that he was “actively exploring” a run for the US presidency in 2016 and would establish a political action committee in January raise funds for his bid for presidency.

Governors of New Jersey Chris Christie, Rick Perry of Texas, and Scott Walker of Wisconsin, and Senators like Ted Cruz, and Marco Rubio are other potential Republican candidates.
