Armed men have killed a Muslim cleric on a highway in the center of the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

Sheikh Ibrahim Hassan Kirya, the spokesman of Kibuli Mosque, said on Monday that Sheikh Mustafa Bahiga delivered a lecture and then headed to the southern Kampala district of Najjanankumbi, where he performed the dusk prayer on Sunday evening.

Kirya added that Bahiga shortly afterward proceeded to the Bwebajja neighborhood to perform the last prayer of the day.

Unknown gunmen showed up on Entebbe highway, and fired four gunshots at Bahiga. Locals shifted the wounded Muslim cleric to a nearby clinic, where medical staff could not do anything due to the severity of the wounds.

Bahiga was then transported to Kibuli Muslim Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.

Bahiga was the second Muslim cleric to be killed in Uganda in less than a week.

On Christmas day, the leader of the Shia Muslim Community in Uganda, Sheikh Dactoor Abdu Kadir Muwaya, was killed by unknown assailants at his home in Uganda’s eastern district of Mayuge.

The attackers fled the scene on a motorcycle after the assault. No arrests have been made so far.

Muwaya was the director of the Mayuge-based Ahlul Bait Islamic Foundation, which has constructed several mosques across Uganda and sponsored the education of Ugandan children in need.
