BAKU (Sputnik) — Baku is satisfied with the development of defense industry cooperation with Russia, as the country remains the main partner of Azerbaijan in the field, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev told Sputnik.
“Our main partner in this regard is Russia. If I am not mistaken, the contracts signed with Russia are worth some $5 billion, and the majority of these contracts have already been implemented. So the weapons of the Azerbaijani army are mostly Russian. We are pleased with this cooperation, and we are one of the major buyers of Russian weapons,” Aliyev told Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency’s Director General Dmitry Kiselev in an interview.
The Azerbaijani leader also recalled that Baku was purchasing weapons from Turkey, Iran, Belarus and Israel, and intends to establish defense industry cooperation with Pakistan as well, but such plans do not push aside the interaction with Russia.
In 2003, Moscow and Baku signed an agreement on the defense industry cooperation. The relations continued to develop further, marked by regular meetings of the defense officials, particularly on the ministerial level, as well as intelligence, border and anti-terrorism cooperation.
