Barking and Dagenham council has announced plans to track down the owners of dogs who fail to clean up their pets’ mess using doggie DNA. It’s not 1 April is it? The measures seem both ridiculous and slightly terrifying, and would rely on owners registering their pooches on a special dog database.

Currently, registration is voluntary, but from April this will be required by law. Council officers and park rangers will have the enviable task of picking up any shit they find in public place, which will then presumably be sent to CSI-style labs, where intelligent, witty, photogenic scientist types will crack jokes, get their hands mucky and pinpoint the source of each sloppy mess.

It seems like a hell of a lot of work to get through for the sake of not treading in poo, but Barking and Dagenham councillor Darren Rodwell says its time to “get tough” on inconsiderate owners. Under current rules, owners can be fined up to £1,000 for failing to clean up. I’m just interested to find out how much human excrement they find.
