As Bernie Sanders continues to play the sheepdog and corral disaffected leftists back into the pen of warmonger Hillary Clinton, the rest of the world is taking notice of the atrocities perpetrated by Bernie’s favorite state in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia. Raif Badawi, the Saudi blogger who was recently awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, has been sentenced to receive 1,000 lashes and is facing 10 years in prison. The Sakharov Prize named after Russian scientist and dissident Andrei Sakharov, was established in 1988 by the European Parliament as a means to honour individuals and groups of people who have dedicated their lives to the defense of human rights and freedom of thought [i]. In his blog, Raif polemicized against the feudal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and wrote in support of a secular, progressive state. Time magazine writes:

Badawi was fined more than $250,000, sentenced to 10 years in prison [and 1000 lashes] for setting up a blog called the Saudi Arabian Free Liberals Forum, which advocated free speech until it was shut down following his arrest in 2012. The charges against him include “violating Islamic values and propagating liberal thought.[ii]
Badawi is also the co-recipient of the PEN Pinter Prize in the UK, which recognizes writers who exhibit, “fierce intellectual determination…to define the real truth of our lives and our societies.”[iii]

Calls for Raif’s release have poured in from the likes of Human Rights Watch, EU Parliament President Martin Schultz, new Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and UK Labour Party head Jeremy Corbyn. Others like Karim Lahiji of the International Federation for Human Rights have encouraged the EU to take a tougher stance against Saudi Arabia. Sweden has even canceled arms shipments to the Kingdom in protest. Despite this conspicuous outcry, Bernie Sanders continues to remain faithful to his partners in Saudi Arabia by remaining silent about the imprisoned blogger.

Badawi’s crimes amount to criticism of the senior Wahhabi elites that rule the benighted kingdom. Badawi had dared claim that a major Saudi school, Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, is a “den of terrorists.” Alumni of the university include terrorist notables like Abu Omar al-Saif, a fighter in Afghanistan during the 1980s and the North Caucasus until his death in 2005; Nasir al-Fahd, a jihadist cleric who pledged his allegiance to ISIS in August of this year; and Abdullah el-Faisal, a former cleric of the notorious Brixton Mosque from 1991 until 1994. Brixton Mosque is a well known recruitment center for jihadists and patsies, including the “Shoe Bomber” Richard Reid and Zacarias Moussaoui, the alleged “20th hijacker” of the 9/11 attacks.

Bernie Sanders would like to further empower the bloody regime of Saudi Arabia, which Raif Badawi rightfully excoriated in articles like “Dreams of a Caliphate.” The foreign policy of a Sanders presidency would feature Saudi Arabia as the financier and logistics provider to an ever-expanding network of terrorist entities, while Saudi clerics continue to fan the bitter flames of Wahhabism throughout the Middle East. The shameful silence of Sanders on the case of Raif Badawi, particularly in light of mass condemnation by leading leftist politicians, betrays the moral bankruptcy of his assumed brand of “Democratic Socialism” in the 2016 Presidential elections.
