US House Speaker John Boehner has warned President Barack Obama about withdrawing American forces from Afghanistan, saying he should have learned from his mistakes in Iraq.

“Has President Obama not learned from his mistakes in Iraq?” asked Boehner.

The Ohio Republican argued that Afghanistan would be like Iraq with complete withdrawal of US troops.

“No one wants to see our military men and women in harm’s way, but as we’ve seen in Iraq with the rise of ISIL, arbitrary, political deadlines on war are rarely observed or honored by our terrorist enemies committed to enslaving religious minorities, raping women, beheading journalists and slaughtering Americans,” said Boehner.

The Pentagon announced that as many as 10,800 US troops would stay in Afghanistan under a short-term agreement to “train and assist local security forces.”

Boehner said keeping hundreds of troops is “a positive development,” adding that “but the administration remains committed to its arbitrary deadline of pulling out all US troops by the end of 2016.”

The president, however, announced on Sunday the official end of the 13-year US military presence in Afghanistan.

He said the Afghan people could “reclaim their communities, take the lead for their own security, hold historic elections and complete the first democratic transfer of power in their country’s history.”
