British military engineers and medics are being sent to Sierra Leone to set up and staff an Ebola treatment centre.

The UN, WHO and NGOs have been calling for a military assets to tackle Ebola but I could not find any official request by the government of Sierra Leone for the British army to help fight Ebola.

At least, there seems to be no mention of such a request for British soldiers on the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health facebook site.

The facebook site has repeated appeals for donations to pay for emergency supplies for health personnel and a break down of new donations, but no sign of any donation from the UK.

There are no appeals for the UK military to come.

The British army presence comes after US army personnel who worked in Kenema Hospital at the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak between mid March until July 25th left the country.

“USAMRIID personnel also rotated to a hospital in Sierra Leone from mid-March until July 25, establishing a diagnostic laboratory at the Kenema Government Hospital but it no longer has any personnel in that country, according to a USAMRIID spokeswoman.”

“USAMRIID has been rotating personnel to Liberia since April and has two workers at the Liberian Institute of Biological Research Hospital conducting diagnostic testing and training staff.”
