Canadian police have arrested a former radio host over sexual assault charges as the scandal has grabbed the country’s media spotlight over the past weeks.

On Wednesday, Jian Ghomeshi was charged with four counts of sexual assault and one count of what authorities called “overcome resistance-choking.”

The charges came after several women came forward with abuse allegations.
Ghomeshi was released on bail of C$100,000 (USD 88,645) after a brief court appearance.

Ghomeshi’s lawyer Marie Henein said that he “will be pleading not guilty. We will address these allegations fully, directly in a courtroom.”

Canadian Broadcasting Corp fired the 47-year-old host in October after media reports of his sexual assault allegations first emerged.

Ghomeshi, the host of a popular radio show called “Q” that was heard on many public stations in the US, has denied the allegations. He emphasized that he had consensual “rough sex with women.”
