Costa Rica’s National Emergency Commission issued a red alert on Sunday after the sinking of a ship carrying toxic chemicals.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The vessel, which capsized near Puntarenas, a tourist town on the country’s Pacific coast, carried 180 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, the commission said in a statement.

The alert was issued for fishers and beach goers “in order to prevent people from going into the sea,” which could be harmful due to the spill.
People in the region were advised to avoid all contact with sea water, including “fishing of any kind” in the area covered by the alert, while health care institutions were instructed to monitor possible consequences of the incident.
