The Tunisian authorities have imposed a nationwide curfew for an indefinite period, until the order is reestablished in the country, Interior Ministry spokesman Walid Louguini told Sputnik Friday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, a curfew was imposed from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. local time and beginning on Friday night due to increased attacks on public and private property amid ongoing anti-unemployment protests.
“The curfew will be valid until order and security are established. It has not been defined for how long it will be in force,” Louguini said.
Late last week, protests erupted in the western Tunisian province of Kasserine, shortly after an unemployed university graduate committed suicide over job-related issues. Protesters are demanding that they be given jobs, while the authorities have strengthened military patrols near all administrative buildings in the city.
Media reports suggest that the overall level of unemployment in Tunisia at the end of 2015 was 15.3 percent, while Kasserine had the highest regional unemployment of 30 percent. One in three people who find themselves unemployed in Tunisia are university graduates.
