Denis Pushilin elected parliamentary speaker of Donetsk People’s Republic

One of the co-chairmen of the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Denis Pushilin has been elected Chairman of the DPR’s Supreme Soviet (Speaker of parliament), Interfax reports with reference to DPR high government official Miroslav Rudenko.

Pushilin was elected by Supreme Soviet MPs on 19 May. Vladimir Makovich was appointed Assistant Speaker.

On 11 May, a referendum was held in the Donetsk Region. During the referendum the majority of citizens voted in favour of the region’s independence as a separate republic. Currently, the DPR is rapidly building its own state bodies and systems. Thus, a draft Constitution was adopted on 15 May, according to which people are the highest power in the democratic republic, the Supreme Soviet is the parliament which is the main legislative body and the head of the state is the chairman (speaker) of the Supreme Soviet elected by MPs.
