Donetsk region self-defense not to lay down arms unilaterally

The self-defense force of Donbass does not intend to lay down arms unilaterally, cochairman of the government of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic Miroslav Rudenko has told Interfax.

“Given the mortar shelling of Mariupol, the seizure of the building of the city council and other aggressive actions of the opposite side, it is difficult to speak so far of laying down arms or any talks. Too many people have died,” he said.

He said that the people’s council of the republic would meet for an extraordinary session in Donetsk on Thursday.

“At the council session that will begin at noon local time, it will be decided among other things whether to postpone the referendum or not. Very much is going to depend on the decision of the council,” Rudenko said.

He said he does not see any chance of holding Ukrainian presidential elections in Donbass.

“I see no chances of holding these elections because there are no people among the candidates who could represent Donbass and the southeast as a whole. I see no future for these elections,” he said.
