Egyptians have staged a demonstration in Cairo to express solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza who are facing a relentless Israeli onslaught, Press TV reports.

Peaceful protesters held a pro-Palestinian demonstration at the premises of the syndicate of journalists in downtown Cairo on Thursday.

The participants denounced the Israeli aggression and also condemned the Egyptian government for failing to help Palestinians.

“It’s an ally to Israel. It [Egyptian government] has been helping Israelis by demolishing the tunnels and hitting the people in Sinai, and demonizing the people in Gaza – all of them not only Hamas,” said political activist, Hazem Salem.

Protesters also slammed the military-backed Egyptian government for taking a passive stance in the case of the unabated Israeli aggression on Palestinians.

“[Mohammed] Morsi was pro-Palestinian and pro-Arab and Islamic rights, while this regime is just serving the Israelis and trying to get some permission or some recognition by the Israelis and the Americans to stay in power,” Salem added.

Activists have been demanding that Egypt open up closed borders with Gaza in order to relieve Palestinians who are trapped in the coastal strip.

Nearly 110 Palestinians have so far been killed since Israel began pounding targets in the Gaza Strip earlier this week. Palestinian sources say one third of the casualties are women and children.

Israel has also mobilized 20,000 soldiers for a possible ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military frequently launches indiscriminate attacks against the Palestinians residing in Gaza, which has remained literally cut off from the outside world by a crippling Israeli blockade since 2007.
