The Gulf Cooperation Council has denounced Yemen’s recent events where Shia Houthi militias seized power in the country as a a “coup,” AFP reported.
“The Houthi coup marks a grave and unacceptable escalation… and endangers the security, stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yemen,” a statement from the GCC announced.
On Friday, Yemen’s Shia Houthi rebel movement declared the dissolution of parliament and the installation of a new assembly.
In a televised announcement Friday from the Republican Palace in the capital, Sanaa, the group said it was creating a 151-member presidential council to act as a government for an interim two-year period, according to media reports.
