The International Criminal Court (ICC) has upheld a decision which allows Libyan authorities to try Muammar Gaddafi’s ex-spy chief Abdullah Senussi.

Appeals judges at the ICC on Thursday rejected an appeal against the Court’s prior decision not to put him on trial in The Hague.

The court’s appeals chamber said prosecutors in Libya are “willing and genuinely able” to investigate crimes against humanity supposedly committed by Gaddafi’s long-time aide.

Defense attorneys had earlier appealed to the ICC’s ruling issued in October 2013.

The ICC indicted Senussi on charges of murder and persecution during a popular uprising in Libya in 2011.

Libyans, moreover, believe the former spymaster was also behind the massacre of nearly 1,200 inmates following a Tripoli prison uprising in 1996.

Nearly three years after the fall of late leader Muammar Gaddafi, Libya is still grappling with rising insecurity with numerous clashes between government forces and rival militia groups worsening the situation.

The former rebels refuse to lay down arms despite efforts by the central government to impose law and order.

Thousands of angry Libyan demonstrators frequently take to the streets in different cities to protest against insecurity in the North African country.
