Measles: Make MMR jab mandatory’ call by US expert

Dr Paul Offit said mandatory vaccinations should be considered

As a measles epidemic in south Wales continues to spread at an “alarming rate” an expert has said mandatory vaccinations should be considered.

Dr Paul Offit, a US-based measles expert, told the BBC that mandatory vaccinations in America had prevented similar outbreaks.

His comments came as measles cases in the Swansea area rose to 620.

The Welsh government said it believed the “hard won trust” in MMR would be damaged if vaccination was compulsory.

Public Health Wales (PHW) said there were no signs of a slow down in cases.

Speaking on BBC Newsnight, Dr Offit said Britain would benefit from American-style mandatory vaccinations.
‘Needlessly suffering’

People in the United States can still claim exemption on philosophical or religious grounds but Dr Paul Offit said it still increased vaccination rates.

“If we didn’t mandate vaccines I think we would suffer in many ways what’s going on in Europe now,” Dr Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said.

“Many children are needlessly suffering this disease and being hospitalised by this disease and occasionally being killed which I think is unconscionable.

“In this country we just don’t think its your inalienable right to catch and transmit a potentially fatal infection and so we at least put that one hoop you have to jump through which is mandatory vaccination.”

The Welsh government said it was not considering compulsory vaccination at present and that they were seeing a “much improved uptake in vaccination rates now”.

A spokesman said: “The current epidemic, affecting school age children in particular, is the legacy of a damaging and unfounded health scare in the late 1990s.

“Since then, trust in the MMR has been regained, to the point where almost 95% of pre-school children are vaccinated. We believe that at this point, the hard-won trust in the MMR vaccine and in GPs would be damaged by introducing compulsory vaccination.”

Health officials dealing with the outbreak in the Swansea area said despite 1,700 people being vaccinated with the MMR jab at drop-in clinics at the weekend, the spread of the disease was still rising.

Experts said they were not seeing enough children aged 10 to 17 coming forward for the jab.

PHW estimate 6,000 children have still not been vaccinated, with the outbreak still not peaking.

Parents across Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend are being urged to get their children vaccinated with GPs.

Dr Marion Lyons, director of health protection for PHW, warned there was no sign of the outbreak, which began last November, easing.

“We’re getting a lot of new cases in this week,” Dr Lyons told BBC Radio Wales.

“And because so many are unvaccinated still, you know they will infect so many more that we will see next week and the week after because of the long incubation period.

“It is still rising at an alarming rate.”

At risk

More hospital drop-in clinics will be held in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend on Saturday, targeting children and adolescents who did not have their scheduled MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) jabs as babies and toddlers.

Some GP surgeries are also laying on special vaccination sessions, while children will be given the jab at schools in the outbreak area when they return next week after the Easter break.

Dr Lyons said it is the older children who are now most at risk from the disease because parents have taken babies and toddlers for vaccination in recent days.

“Most of our cases are occurring in the 10 to 17 year olds. That’s the population where a lot of them haven’t had the vaccine,” she said.

“They’ll go back to school next week, they’ll be playing together, socialising together and they will spread it.”
Discredited research

She said the public health trust has written to every parent about vaccination.

Concerns over the safety of the MMR jab were raised in the late 1990s when a surgeon published a since discredited paper in The Lancet suggesting MMR was linked to an increased risk of autism.

That paper, and subsequent media coverage, led to immunisation rates plummeting.

But Dr Lyons also said she did not believe parents were concerned any longer about the “myth” surrounding the MMR jab.

“I don’t think that is the issue now,” she said.

She said parents of normally healthy older children, who don’t visit GPs and miss spot-checks, can forget they are at risk of measles.

“I think it is a case of just reminding the parents that their children are just as vulnerable as the little ones,” she said.

Health Minister Mark Drakeford thanked NHS staff for their response to the measles outbreak and said it was “vital to maintain momentum” of people having vaccinations.

“Those not vaccinated are highly likely to catch the disease as measles is still circulating, and we still face the awful possibility of a child left with serious and permanent complications such as eye disorders, deafness or brain damage, or dying,” he added.

The total number of measles cases in the Swansea area now stands just two short of the total in the outbreak in the north west of England in the year to February 2013.

Most of these cases were on Merseyside, in Greater Manchester and west Lancashire.

  • “Diet, injections, and injunctions will combine, from a very early age, to produce the sort of character and the sort of beliefs that the authorities consider desirable, and any serious criticism of the powers that be will become psychologically impossible. Even if all are miserable, all will believe themselves happy, because the government will tell them that they are so.” -Bertrand Russell, The Impact of Science on Society p50, 1953

The Impact of Science on Society by Bertrand Russell

  • This measles incident is being over-hyped as usual in order to improve vaccination rates and thus increase population control/reduction as well as profits for big pharma. Big pharma is controlled by The Worshipful Company of Apothecaries and The Worshipful Company of Barbers. Please study the population reduction desires of the Club of Rome and their Global 2000 Report. Please read the book ‘The Impact of Science on Society’ by Bertrand Russell and wake up to the profiting and Malthusian actions taking place. Measles is not as deadly as claimed and most children do not die or come close to dying from the illness, I had measles and did I die? Measles actually aids you in later life against certain cancers. People at one time had measles parties so please do not be scared by propaganda in order to bring in higher vaccination rates and thus further damage of the human genome. Dr Paul Offitt is a menace to mankind pushing dangerous vaccines that pump highly dangerous chemicals like mercury direct into the bloodstream. Study his profiting from vaccines and study his very dangerous quack words. Now why would you fine or cut off unvaccinated people Dr Paul Offitt if your vaccines were so special and worked as claimed? Wouldn’t your vaccined children be superior to unvaccinated and thus not suffer from any threat of measles? See the doublethink and speak that is going on? Keep well away from the MMR jab and make sure you listen to Dr Andrew Wakefield who has been shit on by Livery masters of big pharma. Utilize homoeopathic preparations, Pulsatilla and Sulphur to help deal properly with measles.

    -= The Unhived Mind

Dr. Paul Offit [4] is often seen in the media promoting vaccines as being safe. As a matter of fact, he states children can safely get up to 10,000 of them. [5][6] What isn’t often discussed is the royalties he made from vaccine sales.

  • Vaccine Inventor Paul Offit Seeks End to Religious & Philosophical Vaccine Exemptions

    Dr. Suzanne Humphries

    August 28, 2012

Millionaire vaccine inventor and mandatory vaccine advocate Paul Offit recently released a short VIDEO for doctors on medscape. Here is a transcript of the speech. This statement that outlines Offit’s personal belief system could be a prelude to the legal removal of all philosophical and religious vaccine exemptions in the United States of America. This is something that Offit has been working toward for years, and the likely end-purpose of his series of books.

Paul Offit believes that exempting your child from vaccination is morally reprehensible. He considers himself an authority on autism, all infectious diseases, morality, history, every religious systems, and infant immunology. You may also recognize Dr Offit as the one who says that all vaccines are perfectly safe and infants can tolerate theoretically 10,000 of them at once:

A more practical way to determine the diversity of the immune response would be to estimate the number of vaccines to which a child could respond at one time…. each infant would have the theoretical capacity to respond to about 10, 000 vaccines at any one time. [1]

The status accorded to him by the pharmaceutical and medical fields permits him to influence the opinions and practice of lower rung physicians regarding vaccine exemptions. Unfortunately, even doctors will simply believe the “expert”[2] without bothering to go and check their own medical literature to see if the self-proclaimed expertise has a solid scientific foundation. Research shows that when people listen to the expert, the part of their brains that is capable of independent thought goes to sleep.[3]

In Offit’s video, he said that religious exemptions do not “make sense” and went on to inform doctors on the chronological age of three religious scriptures, and how they could not possibly have anything to do with vaccination because vaccines are so much newer than those tattered and outmoded scribbles of hundreds or thousands of years ago. Those “outmoded” books, including the Old Testament and the Koran, include specific passages containing principles which obliquely address many health issues. To many people, these scriptures place vaccines amongst may things which are not consistent with scriptural hygiene. Here are specific references from the HOLY BIBLEand the KORAN. Dr Katme’s explanation of the Islamic problems with vaccination can be readHERE. Hindu faith also has restrictions on what is permitted in their bodies, the treatment of cows and monkeys, etc. Vaccination is an affront to many Hindus who know the contents of vaccines.

God gave Moses core principles on Mt. Sinai that are held in high esteem by both Christians and Jews the world over. Offit misses out on the timelessness of God’s words. God’s principles don’t wear out. Neither do they need continuous repeating and revising.

God could have instructed Moses on how to inoculate the Israelites in the desert when the diseases came upon them. If you take note of the Old Testament books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, you’ll see that there were very specific guidelines handed down on everything from worship of God to disease management, with warnings as to what would happen if those guidelines were ignored. The Israelites had highly skilled metal smiths and very sophisticated craftsmen and oil production. They had access to all the tools that Edward Jenner used to invent the smallpox vaccine, which included cowpox (not smallpox) pus scraped directly from infected cow bellies, a crude filter, glycerine, and a sharp prong. Paul Offit may not realize how crude the highly praised first vaccine really was. Still, medical vaccination or inoculation of any sort, was never part of God’s instruction.

Hospital-based doctors who consider any disease that is supposedly treatable by pharmaceutical medicine to have a spiritual component, are considered to be quacks. Lip service, however, is given through the tolerance of chaplains and religious representatives, so long as they don’t interfere with the use of drugs, vaccines or “medical science.”

In the New Testament, did Jesus, the greatest human healer of all time, ever turn to Luke, the physician-apostle, to do any of the healing work of people brought to him? No. Did any of the apostles and disciples ever call on Luke to do God’s healing for them? No. Did Jesus instruct Luke to carry on with his old medical practices later? No. Jesus left the Holy Spirit here on earth for any and all to ask for, receive and gain wisdom from.

In medical school, doctors are taught to view the human body as a random mistake-ridden vessel, which is to be forced into submission with antibiotics, antihypertensives, antihistamines, anti-inflammatories, surgery, drugs etc. The natural extension of this paradigm over the past 100 years has been for the medical profession to condition human beings to not trust anyone but certified medical doctors to fix this defective mistake-ridden aberration of creation. Veterinary science has similarly conditioned humans to consider animals as defective, mistake-ridden creation prototypes. The number one successful strategy in creating this industry has been to always implant fear into people’s heads. That increases cortisol, undermines the immune system, and creates a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Vaccines are the template for the fear-based belief system that those who don’t know their history will easily fall for. The trajectory of fear removes God from the picture. A fear-ridden populace couldn’t possibly credit God with any usefulness once the medical/pharmaceutical industry sets itself up in God’s place.

Through the resultant lack of faith in the human creation and the God who does actually have the power to heal all through both the design of the body and miracles, seeps the arrogance (and ignorance) of doctors and scientists who think they can outwit God’s nature. While sometimes it might look like it’s possible to outwit nature, for example by using antibiotics, the law of “What you sow you will reap” often comes back with a vengeance. Drug-resistant bacteria like MRSA, VRE, and overgrowth of the colitis-causing Clostridium difficile, are prime examples.

Doctors like Paul Offit believe that the slowly maturing immune system of an infant is defective[4] and that vaccinations[5][6], designed to put it into hyper-drive, will fix the defects. On the other hand, Dr Offit doesn’t have much faith in his own laboratory creations, since he believes that the anti-vaccination movement “threatens us all,” including presumably … the vaccinated.

Paul Offit makes reference to the two states that have ruled that parents do not have a religious privilege to decide how their children’s bodies are treated, citing US Constitutional amendment 14. The 14th amendment was designed to protect newly freed slaves. It is being used for a different purpose in Mississippi and West Virginia. Many people are unaware that the 14th amendment is the most controversial amendment ever proposed, and that according to some legal experts, it wasNEVER LEGALLY RATIFIED. See also this PDF.

I would like to refer Paul Offit to Public Law 97-280 96 STAT.1211 (97th Congress) which is a law that Declares the Bible to Be The Word of God. This represents Congress’ stance that the Bible has its rightful place above the Constitution because our forefathers were inspired by the Bible in the writing of the Constitution. Every four years the president of the USA is sworn into office with his hand on a Bible. Offit would probably just consider this a silly tradition. However, most presidents have publicly recognized the role of God and religious faith in the public life and spiritual heritage of America.

If corporate medicine is going to be permitted to over-ride parental philosophical and religious objections, and invade the bodies of our children with dozens of vaccine antigens, chemicals, animal DNA, aborted fetal tissue, and CANCER CELLS, the source of these laws must come under scrutiny.

The impingement on Article I of the FIRST AMENDMENT of the Constitution should also be taken into consideration.“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

It would appear that the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation has made PLANS that would steamroll right over the protection of our free speech.

An anti-vaccine surveillance and alert system Seth Kalichman of the in the USA will establish an Internet-based global monitoring and rapid alert system for finding, analysing, and counteracting communication campaigns containing misinformation regarding vaccines to support global immunization efforts.

Only time will tell what is going to be considered “misinformation” and “counteraction.” If parents were convinced that vaccines are safe and effective, there would be no anti-vaccination movement. It shouldn’t take military action or Internet surveillance to maintain the health of communities or global immunization efforts. This type of action is not new. It is reminiscent of policies found in National Socialist empires, Stalinist countries, or Communist China.

Those who push removal of philosophical and religious exemption should at least be free of financial CONFLICTS OF INTEREST, and they are NOT. More importantly, in order to bolster the 30-billion-dollar-per-year-income vaccine industry they consider to be evidence-based science, they should not be proclaiming worldwide expertise in what it takes to have a personal relationship with Jesus, something they appear to have no experience in.

Dr Offit considers “evidence based medicine” to be separate from religion, or spirituality – yet the Christian scriptures, both old testament and new, make it perfectly clear that good health is solely predicated on a living relationship with God.

When it comes to vaccines, these flag bearers of evidence-based medicine use research protocols which involve tight selection and exclusion criteria for vaccine study entrants. They then recommend those same vaccines, assuring safety to concerned parents, to even the children who would have been refused entry to that vaccine safety study.

Instead of placebos, evidence based medicines uses vaccines, and calls them placebos, yet vaccines do not fit their own definition of placebo;pla·ce·bo/pləˈsēbō/Noun:

A harmless pill, medicine, or procedure prescribed more for the psychological benefit to the patient than for any physiological effect.
A substance that has no therapeutic effect, used as a control in testing new drugs.

Here are some examples of vaccine trial “placebos”:

The hepatitis A vaccine was the placebo for the influenza vaccine in a well publicized STUDY. The study’s designer is quoted as SAYING that he didn’t want to withhold a potentially beneficial treatment from the control subjects. “Hepatitis was not studied, but to keep the investigators from knowing which colonies received flu vaccine, they had to offer placebo shots, and hepatitis shots do some good while sterile water injections do not.“ So, if the placebo is supposed to have no therapeutic effect as the definition that was taken from an ardently pro-vaccine website that criticizes our criticism of their use of placebos, and the study used hepA placebo because “water does no good” … where on earth is the match up with even their definition of science?

You can go HERE and see for yourself how many dangerous false placebo trials are done. THIS is an interesting one where the placebo for evaluating the safety of albumin-containing vaccines in egg-allergic children is … an egg-containing vaccine.

Multi antigen vaccines used in trials, as placebos for other multi antigen vaccines happens all of the time. These studies would be the ones Offit refers to, regarding the safety of giving numerous vaccines on the same day.

Not using real placebos, like saline, is a trade sleight of hand, because harmful placebos will give results which show that the study vaccine appears to have the same safety profile as the placebo – and is therefore seemingly OK.

The truth is, that corporate medicine makes the rules up to suit its own needs. When children die and parents successfully sue the vaccine companies responsible for the deaths, first congressmen (who accept massive corporate medicine campaign funding) then the Supreme Court, jump in to protect vaccine interests. It is politics and money, which rule on vaccine recommendations. I’ve only cited a couple examples of the hypocrisy of the vaccine faithful. There are hundreds if not thousands more examples of both scientific hypocrisy and CORRUPTION.

Paul Offit challenges the issue of philosophical exemption using the word origins. He says:

Philo means love, sophos means wisdom. Exactly where is the wisdom in saying that it is better not to get vaccines than to get them?

For many educated parents, scientists and parents of vaccine-injured children who have given birth to subsequently unvaccinated children, who have the kind of health that God intended (and pediatricians appear to not understand), there is plenty of wisdom and indeed love, in not vaccinating.

Many of us who once bowed at the altar of “eminence-based” medicine, have learned the hard way, and had to reboot our belief system. We have learned through experience and researching the latest core scientific understanding of the immune system, that the human body can and does do the job God intended. By going back to the scriptures and understanding the principles from the “manufacturer’s manual,” we have a newfound awe and respect for God’s design. We are learning that we can trust God’s design to maintain its health, providing we follow God’s principles to support and maintain what he manufactured, which is what it means to have a relationship with God, and to believe in God’s word.

    A d v e r t i s e m e n t

And I ask you Paul Offit, where is the wisdom in injecting newborn infants with neurotoxins, carcinogens, foreign animal and viral DNA, and metals that are known to alter the natural course of God’s exquisitely designed immunity? To many who believe in God, vaccines are anything but divine. Fear of disease and faith in vaccination, along with the alteration of the human organism with new bacteria, new vaccine viruses and chronic illness are not part of God’s curriculum.

In the developed world today, we see risk-averse parenting, and cocooned children, both of whom have become disconnected from the earth, largely as a result of corporate medicine. Yet when this same medical system fails with its drugs, etc, they turn back to such things as MAGGOT THERAPY, and in desperation, try FECAL TRANSPLANTATION. See THIS ARTICLE TOO. Both of these treatments are, in an ironic sort of way, God’s contributions. Isn’t that interesting? These are things that any nation in existence in the Old Testament times, could have done…,

The problem with man trying to assume the role of God is that every new discovery shows scientists more of what they DON’T know. Occasionally the medical system discovers a mistake they have made and then they have to change course and discontinue some long-held practice because it caused cancer, heart disease, fetal malformations, or loss of life. But rarely is the public told about that. Where possible, such knowledge is kept “in house.”

We have to ask ourselves why the most heavily funded research is towards chemically or biologically altering an immune system about which the MEDICAL SYSTEM KNOWS LITTLE.

Where are the studies that show the short- and long-term safety in vaccinating a woman who bears a new life in her womb? The vaccine product description states that they have not been tested for mutagenicity or teratogenicity. Certainly they will never be tested for long-term consequences on the developing child. Do the lessons of DIETHYLSTILBESTROL (DES) not apply to vaccines? The eminence based medical system will no doubt perform vaccine studies only asking carefully crafted pre-determined questions with an eye to what they want to see. The data generated by the statisticians of pharmaceutically funded studies, with cunningly chosen placebos, will no doubt find no toxicity in vaccinating pregnant women, whatsoever.

Where are the long-term studies on vaccinated vs. unvaccinated and the status of their health? “It can’t be done,” say Offit, et al. Most importantly, where is the interest in successful treatment of the infectious diseases? After all, one of the most potent marketing phrases behind so many of these vaccines is “because there is no cure.” Perhaps the word “cure” is banned on the potential research list.

As medical students, we learned the biochemical process of oxidative metabolism and the function of the amazing mitochondria. How many practicing doctors really appreciate the design of those biochemical and electrical pathways that are essential to properly functioning and robust health? How many doctors know how to put that knowledge into practice? Why doesn’t medical education support nutritional programs that are geared toward this primary process of oxygen utilization into energy and inflammation reduction? There is nothing more important to the sustenance and vibrance of health. Just try holding your breath for three minutes and you will see how true that is. There is nothing more important than the body’s use of oxygen, which extends far beyond the lungs and ultimately involves the mitochondria. Where are the studies looking into how vaccines alter the process of oxidative metabolism, the ratio of NAD/NADH? I shudder to think what the results would show. Where are the studies looking at whether vaccines have an adverse epigenetic effect on the development and function of the immune system? To me these intricate and elaborate processes are sacred and designed by a power far greater than Paul Offit or any scientist. Yet most of them act is if it would be possible for them to develop a far better human with a much better immune system than the ones they are studying.

Those of us who do not vaccinate our children have learned from each other how to support our children through the usual childhood illnesses, because we can’t rely on conventional medicine’s approach. It is just too limited in principles, vision and solutions.

In the timeline of humanity, vaccines are a modern invention but they have absolutely NO claim to the betterment of humanity. There are distinct and known factors that had a far bigger impact on diseases and mortality than vaccines, and they were implemented long before the vaccines were in full use. See AIELLO, NELSON, and MCKINLEY. See also “THE AMAZING DECLINE.” Until the proper study is conducted to compare the health of vaccinated vs unvaccinated children, nobody has the authority to uphold vaccination as superior to holistic management.

Paul Offit claims to be an unbiased scientist with no personal interest in vaccination. To me, this does not make sense. In 2008 while sitting on the ACIP as a voting member, Children’s Hospital Of Pennsylvania sold its royalty stake in Offit’s vaccine RotaTeq for $182 million, and Offit received an unspecified percentage: his share of the intellectual property, said to be “in the millions.” Why doesn’t he just call himself what he really is? A “multimillionaire vaccine patent owner who, byINFLUENCING IMMUNIZATION PRACTICES while sitting on the Advisory Committee For Immunization Practices, had a huge personal interest in policymaking, and wants to remove your personal rights as to what goes into your infant and your body by way of injection, and touts his own personal feelings on religion and wisdom to naïve doctors over the internet.”

According to a 2009 Philadelphia Magazine interview with Offit, a reporter asked him once if he was the Antichrist, and he replied, “I’m just one of the Devil’s many humble servants.”

  • Paul Offit – “Doctor of Vaccine Profit” Caught Lying – Again – Orange County Register

Posted on April 19, 2011 by ChildHealthSafety

It looks like this is the reason we now have Seth Mnookin to replace Paul Offit as liar-in-chief. [And wasn’t one of the reasons for Wakefield losing his licence alleged dishonesty? The CEO and Board of The Children’s Hospital of Philadephia seem to need to do some spring cleaning of their resident liars?].

The Orange County Register has published: April 18, 2011 the correction [text below in full] regarding lies told by Dr Paul Offit the “Doctor of Vaccine Profit” of the Childrens’ Hospital of Philadelphia.

Paul Offit is an inveterate liar, and will say just about anything to quell parents’ fears that vaccines are causing all this autism. Aside from this new episode of lying Offit lied in one of his books about JB Handley the founder of Generation Rescue. Handley sued him, and Offit was forced to correct his book, write Handley a letter of apology and acknowledgement, and donate money to Jenny McCarthy’s second-favorite (behind GR!) charity at UCLA.

Here is the Orange County Register correction [emphasis added]:-

Correction for April 18 Published: April 18, 2011

An OC Register article dated Aug. 4, 2008 entitled “Dr. Paul Offit Responds” contained several disparaging statements that Dr. Offit of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia made about CBS News Investigative Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson and her report.

Upon further review, it appears that a number of Dr. Offit’s statements, as quoted in the OC Register article, were unsubstantiated and/or false. Attkisson had previously reported on the vaccine industry ties of Dr. Offit and others in a CBS Evening News report “How Independent Are Vaccine Defenders?” July 25, 2008.

Unsubstantiated statements include: Offit’s claim that Attkisson “lied”; and Offit’s claim that CBS News sent a “mean spirited and vituperative” email “over the signature of Sharyl Attkisson” stating “You’re clearly hiding something.”

In fact, the OC Register has no evidence to support those claims.

Further, Offit told the OC Register that he provided CBS News “the details of his relationship, and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s relationship, with pharmaceutical company Merck.”

However, documents provided by CBS News indicate Offit did not disclose his financial relationships with Merck, including a $1.5 million Hilleman chair he sits in that is co-sponsored by Merck.

According to the CBS News’ documentation recently reviewed by the OC Register, the network requested (but Offit did not disclose) the entire profile of his professional financial relationships with pharmaceutical companies including: The amount of compensation he’d received from which companies in speaking fees; and pharmaceutical consulting relationships and fees.

The CBS News documentation indicates Offit also did not disclose his share of past and future royalties for the Merck vaccine he co-invented. To the extent that unsubstantiated and/or false claims appeared in the OC Register and have been repeated by other organizations and individuals, the OC Register wishes to express this clarification for their reference and for the record.

The CBS News revelations about Offit

And his undeclared financial interests in promoting vaccines on behalf of the drug industry:

For years some parents and scientists have raised concerns about vaccine safety, including a possible link to autism and ADD. Many independent experts have sided with government officials and other scientists who say there’s no possible connection. But how “independent” are they? CBS News investigative correspondent Sharyl Attkisson shares here’s what she found.

They’re some of the most trusted voices in the defense of vaccine safety: the American Academy of Pediatrics, Every Child By Two, and pediatrician Dr. Paul Offit.

But CBS News has found these three have something more in common – strong financial ties to the industry whose products they promote and defend.

The vaccine industry gives millions to the Academy of Pediatrics for conferences, grants, medical education classes and even helped build their headquarters. The totals are kept secret, but public documents reveal bits and pieces.

A $342,000 payment from Wyeth, maker of the pneumococcal vaccine – which makes $2 billion a year in sales.

A $433,000 contribution from Merck, the same year the academy endorsed Merck’s HPV vaccine – which made $1.5 billion a year in sales.

Another top donor: Sanofi Aventis, maker of 17 vaccines and a new five-in-one combo shot just added to the childhood vaccine schedule last month.

Every Child By Two, a group that promotes early immunization for all children, admits the group takes money from the vaccine industry, too – but wouldn’t tell us how much.

A spokesman told CBS News: “There are simply no conflicts to be unearthed.” But guess who’s listed as the group’s treasurers? Officials from Wyeth and a paid advisor to big pharmaceutical clients.

Then there’s Paul Offit, perhaps the most widely-quoted defender of vaccine safety.

He’s gone so far as to say babies can tolerate “10,000 vaccines at once.”

This is how Offit described himself in a previous interview: “I’m the chief of infectious disease at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a professor of pediatrics at Penn’s medical school,” he said.

Offit was not willing to be interviewed on this subject but like others in this CBS News investigation, he has strong industry ties. In fact, he’s a vaccine industry insider.

Offit holds in a $1.5 million dollar research chair at Children’s Hospital, funded by Merck. He holds the patent on an anti-diarrhea vaccine he developed with Merck, Rotateq, which has prevented thousands of hospitalizations.

And future royalties for the vaccine were just sold for $182 million cash. Dr. Offit’s share of vaccine profits? Unknown.

There’s nothing illegal about the financial relationships, but to critics, they pose a serious risk for conflicts of interest. As one member of Congress put it, money from the pharmaceutical industry can shape the practices of those who hold themselves out to be “independent.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics, Every Child By Two and Dr. Offit would not agree to interviews, but all told us they’re up front about the money they receive, and it doesn’t sway their opinions.

Today’s immunization schedule now calls for kids to get 55 doses of vaccines by age 6.

Ideally, it makes for a healthier society. But critics worry that industry ties could impact the advice given to the public about all those vaccines.

  • Merck Paid Millions To Promote Vaccines?

“Sometimes gems are difficult to come by. However, when we find them, just clean them up a bit and we can appreciate their ‘real value’. The little treasure I discovered was a document located on Merck Pharmaceutical’s website. It disclosed how much Merck paid doctors as speaking fees in the third and fourth quarter of 2009 alone.

The 72-page document is titled, “Merck & Co., Inc., Disclosure of Payments to U.S. Speakers for Promotional (non-CME) Medical Education Activities conducted in 3Q and 4Q 2009.” And, according to my calculations the sum was a hefty $18,810,495.52. [1]

Keep in mind that, that amount is just for speaking fees!

You may be wondering why this information was made available.

Merck said it was because of transparency. According to one article, “[Merck] has started disclosing payments to U.S.-based medical and scientific professionals who speak on behalf of our company or our products.” [2]

It’s a good start, but apparently the reports were going to be available annually thereafter (July 1, 2009). Well, where are they? It is now 2012.
    Document Shows Heavy Vaccine Promotion

Have you ever wondered why some doctors may be so rabidly in favor of promoting vaccines? Or, haven’t you considered that aspect? Well, here’s the answer: Pharmaceutical companies pay doctors to talk about the ‘problem.’

Not only is it subtle, it’s legal and has financial rewards.

For example, Merck was pushing two new vaccines: Gardasil and Rotateq. After filtering the results in the PDF file for the terms, “HPV, Vaccine, and Rotavirus” the total amount paid came to $2,313,942.81.

Let’s do something mathematically radical. Since Merck reported numbers for only half the year, I’m going double the amount they paid to see what a year’s worth could possibly be.

This would mean Merck spent roughly $4,627,885.62 to encourage doctors to promote their solutions/products, which definitely include vaccines. After reading this, aren’t you sick to your stomach thinking about the ‘Ask Your Doctor’ commercials? I know I am.

But what does this all mean?
    ‘Rotten to the Core’

Think about this, parents. Who do you trust for reliable information? Maybe a better question would be, “Can you trust pharmaceutical companies?”

Outside of the money being doled out to doctors, consider other ways Big Pharma uses its money. Here are some other examples:

Julie Gerberding, former head of the Centers for Disease Control, paved the way for eventual approval for Merck’s Gardasil vaccine, guaranteeing billions in profits for her future employer. After her tenure at the CDC, she became President of the Vaccine Division at Merck Pharmaceuticals. [3]
Dr. Paul Offit [4] is often seen in the media promoting vaccines as being safe. As a matter of fact, he states children can safely get up to 10,000 of them. [5][6] What isn’t often discussed is the royalties he made from vaccine sales.
Dr. Andrew Wakefield identified the measles virus from the MMR vaccine in the intestines of autistic children. For his reward, this heroic doctor was stricken from the medical registry. Furthermore, his professional reputation was targeted to be destroyed. One website details how Merck deals with doctors who threaten vaccine profits. They say, “Court evidence now available on-line at the University of California library shows drug giant Merck systematically targetted [sic] “hit-lists” of doctors to discredit, neutralise or destroy critics of the safety and effectiveness of Merck’s drugs… One memo stated: ’we may need to seek them out and destroy them where they live….’” [7]

Parents want healthy children and straight answers from their pediatricians, the CDC and FDA. Do you think your doctor really believes what he or she is telling you, regarding vaccines? Or, were they paid to believe it? As it stands now, most doctors will deny vaccines have any contributory role in autism or can cause harm.

At the very least, this little document shines sunlight on what many parents of vaccine injured children have been saying all the while: Maybe it’s the cost of keeping the herd quiet.

“Diet, injections, and injunctions will combine, from a very early age, to produce the sort of character and the sort of beliefs that the authorities consider desirable, and any serious criticism of the powers that be will become psychologically impossible. . . .” -Bertrand Russell,1953
