Wal-Mart has suddenly announced it is shuttering five stores from Florida to California for a six-month period due to what the company claims are “plumbing problems.” Nobody except the ultra-gullible really believes the Wal-Mart cover story, however.
“The retail chain announced Monday that five stores are shutting down – one in Brandon, two in Texas, one in Oklahoma and one in California – due to clogging and drainage problems,” reports News Channel 8 in Florida.
The sudden closures were only announced five hours before they took place, thrusting thousands of employees out of work with little or no notice.
“Wal-Mart announced the temporary closure of the Midland Drive store at 2 p.m.” reports the Midland Reporter-Telegram. “Monday, five hours before the designated closure time. No signs have been posted at the store’s entrances, as of 2 p.m. Wal-Mart also closed stores in Brandon, Florida, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Livingston on Monday for plumbing repairs, according to news sources in each of those respective cities.”
Seriously? Does anybody believe the official explanation?
What’s really raising eyebrows across the web is the mathematical improbability that five large Wal-Mart stores would all experience catastrophic plumbing problems at exactly the same day, all requiring exactly the same duration of closures: six months. The very idea that a plumbing problem could be so catastrophic that it would require shuttering an entire store for six months ranks right up there with some of the most ridiculously implausible cover-up explanations we’ve heard over the years such as “steel-reinforced concrete buildings suddenly collapse in perfect demolition style when they suffer from a few small office fires.”
The cover story is so lacking in credibility that every informed person across the internet is laughing like crazy at the sheer stupidity of it. One news organization, Channel 8 in Brandon, Florida, looked into the claimed plumbing repairs and found it was a fictional cover story. “…8 On Your Side has found no paperwork and no work done on the plumbing,” reports WFLA.com. “According to Hillsborough County, Walmart didn’t notify the county’s permit department either. No one there has heard a peep from Walmart about any major repairs.”
The news outlet goes on to report:
On Tuesday, 8 On Your Side stopped by the Walmart, and found no plumber in sight at the Brandon Supercenter, just hundreds of confused and concerned customers.
Wal-Mart stores suddenly closed for six months in five cities
Here’s a list of the cities where Wal-Mart stores are confirmed closed for six months:
Brandon, Florida (outside Tampa) (See news story)
Midland, Texas (See news story)
Livingston, Texas (See news story)
Tulsa, Oklahoma (See news story)
Pico Rivera, California (outside LA)
Five reasons why Wal-Mart’s closure story is obviously a cover story
Reason #1) Wal-Mart apparently wants us to believe that it is impossible to repair plumbing problems without shutting down your business for six months. This idea is totally insane: plumbers repair catastrophic problems all day, every day, while businesses remain open everywhere.
Commercial plumbing companies conduct heroic repairs at hotels, casinos, factories and large retail establishments without interfering with those business operations. This loony idea that five Wal-Mart stores have suddenly — and simultaneously — experienced catastrophic plumbing problems requiring stores to close can only be believed by the most incredibly gullible people alive today. (The same people who might vote for another Clinton or another Bush, it turns out…)
Reason #2) If you were going to have a commercial plumbing repair team tackle real problems across your retail stores, you’d schedule their closures sequentially (one after the other) so that the same team of professional plumbers could tackle them one at a time. You wouldn’t close all five stores simultaneously and suddenly, without notice.
Reason #3) Any plumbing problem so catastrophic that it needed the stores to be closed would require municipal permits to address. Yet no permits exist. “According to Hillsborough County, Walmart didn’t notify the county’s permit department either. No one there has heard a peep from Walmart about any major repairs.” – Channel 8 News.
Reason #4) The closure of just one Wal-Mart store would cause revenue losses of hundreds of thousands of dollars a day. Across five stores, we’re talking millions of dollars each day, multiplied over six months. In addition, the entire existing inventory of food at those Wal-Mart stores is a total loss because it will largely expire over the next six months (Wal-Mart says it’s donating all the food on store shelves to local food banks). Does anyone seriously believe that Wal-Mart is going to sacrifice possibly $100+ million in revenues and inventory losses just to fix some plumbing problems?
Reason #5) The geographic dispersion of the Wal-Mart centers being closed raises a lot of questions about the emptied stores possibly being used as “staging areas” for some other purpose that isn’t being communicated to the public. “Astute story commenters were quick to point out that any plumbing problem can be fixed in much less time than 6 months, even in such large supercenters, and to have several of these 6-month closings all at once in states tied to Jade Helm 15 and martial law exercises (Florida, Texas, California and Oklahoma) reeks of something much deeper than ‘plumbing issues,'” reported All News Pipeline. “One reader tells us that one of these Wal-Mart stores had just recently been remodeled and didn’t have any plumbing problems while the note below is from a source who recently called her local Wal-Mart and discovered they may NEVER reopen!”
Why do YOU think Wal-Mart is suddenly closing five stores for six months?
Is this really the world’s worst coincidence of catastrophic plumbing failures? Or is there something more to this story?

WEIRD NATIONWIDE WALMART CLOSURES SPARK CONSPIRACY THEORIES
Five different stores make sudden announcement, claiming “plumbing” issues

Theories are flying after Walmart stores around the country suddenly announced that they were closing down for six months to deal with “plumbing” issues.
Five different stores suddenly announced they were shutting up shop all for the same reason.
Walmarts in Pico Rivera, California, Livingston, Texas, Midland, Texas, Brandon, Florida, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, all made the announcement.
The news sparked wild conspiracy theories, with some linking the closures to Jade Helm, the upcoming military exercise which some fear is a dry run for martial law.
“A Walmart would make a perfect FEMA detention facility … see ya in the camps!” ranted one respondent.
Another wild theory is that the stores are being decontaminated after receiving radioactive food from the Fukushima region.
More rational theories involve speculation that Walmart has failed to adhere to building codes and may be using the plumbing excuse as a cover to get rid of dangerous construction materials like asbestos.
Others claim the notion that Walmart is closing the stores to avoid lawsuits doesn’t make sense since they would have liability insurance in place. The financial losses incurred by a 6 month closure would also be huge.
What’s bizarre about the closures is that they seem to have been announced with no planning whatsoever. Shelves were fully stocked and employees were given no warning before they were laid off.
At one Walmart store in Pico Rivera, California, employees protested the fact that they had been laid off with just five hours notice.
James Enriquez, the city’s public works director, said Walmart had not even notified authorities of plumbing problems, despite the fact that the company would be required to pull permits before undertaking extensive work.
“If I were a property owner I’d want to make sure my store was closed as little as possible,” Enriquez said. “I would want a permit to be in place the day I was going to close — but we haven’t received anything.”
It’s quite strange that these problems with clogs and leaks have all suddenly occurred at five different stores around the country, plus would it really take 6 months to fix some plumbing issues when entire Walmart stores can be built in less than a year?
“I’m an electrician and I used to work for a company that did repairs at Walmarts,” writes another respondent to the story. “They make the contractors jump through hoops so they do not have to shut down or cause any inconvenience.”
“If it really was a plumbing issue, they would build completely new restrooms first then repair any issue afterwards. Also, knowing Walmart’s timelines, there is no way in hell any contractors would have 6 months to complete any repair project.”
While lurid explanations about FEMA camp staging centers make little sense, it does seem very odd that Walmart announced these closures with no planning whatsoever, laying off hundreds of workers on a whim.
So why do you think Walmart stores around the country have suddenly announced these odd six month closures? Are we to believe claims of plumbing problems or is the reason something more sinister? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
The United States currently has a food supply that would last the nation approximately forty-three (43) days, however, do not allow that fact to lull you into complacency. (The 43 day food supply is a figure that I researched and quoted over a year ago; as much as I’ve tried, it seems that those figures have been erased from all of the sources I used to search for this specific data in the past. Based on the flooding from the Mississippi River and other climate related issues, it’s possible that the 43 day figure is even lower than it was when I first began researching this issue.) Approximately 25% of our food supply is distributed by Wal-Mart Corporation – and in the event of a declaration of Martial Law, Wal-Mart Stores will shut-down and the food supply will be distributed to the population by Wal-Mart because they are the only Corporate entity that has the logistical capabilities to perform such a task. (Keep in mind that the only food that will be available will be that which is above and beyond the need to feed the occupying troops.) – 2 YEARS AGO · POLITICS · WILLIAM CORMIER

Are The Wal-Mart Closings In Jade Helm 15 States A Sign We’ve Sold Them The Rope They’ll Use To Hang Us With By Shopping At Wal-Mart All These Years?
By Stefan Stanford – All News Pipeline – Live Free Or Die
With news of numerous Wal-Mart supercenters now being ‘temporarily closed’ (6+ months each which brings us to October 2015 or later) in at least 4 different states now tied to the Jade Helm 15 ‘exercises’ due to what we’re being told are ‘plumbing problems’, will these massive stores soon be used as ‘food distribution centers’ and to house the headquarters of invading troops from China, here to disarm Americans one by one as promised by Michelle Obama to the Chinese prior to Obama leaving the White House? Astute story commenters were quick to point out that any plumbing problem can be fixed in much less time than 6 months, even in such large supercenters, and to have several of these 6-month closings all at once in states tied to Jade Helm 15 and martial law exercises (Florida, Texas, California and Oklahoma) reeks of something much deeper than ‘plumbing issues’. The fact that China has DEMANDED Americans be disarmed and the scheduled ‘reopening dates’ (if they EVER reopen at all!) of these stores will be after Jade Helm 15 is completed are raising many questions about what is really going on among those who are paying attention to events in Barack Obama’s ‘new America’ as seen in more detail below. One reader tells us that one of these Wal-Mart stores had just recently been remodeled and didn’t have any plumbing problems while the note below is from a source who recently called her local Wal-Mart and discovered they may NEVER reopen!
Called one of the Walmarts (Midland, TX location) just now. Phone was answered by a woman “Thank you for calling Walmart customer care, may I begin this conversation by requesting your first and last name?” (WHAT?) I just said I was calling to check store hours. She asked if I was calling about a particular location. I told her the one on Midland Drive. She said that the store was closed last night at 7pm. I said “Oh? For good?” She said “Yes, at first they said it would be for maybe 6 months but after further review they have decided to close indefinitely.” LOL…plumbing problems my you-know-what. Something fishy is up, whether it has to do with OJH or just Walmart closing stores because they are hurting. Either way, very deceitful the way they are doing whatever this is they are doing. I don’t dare call the other stores from my phone because when the phone first picked up I got the recording of “This call may be monitored or recorded….”.
With ’emperor Obama’ now attempting to dismantle our country for good as referenced in the many links included at the bottom of this story and as America descends one day closer into full-scale countrywide ‘police-state’ tyranny, numerous events taking place the last several days should cement into our heads the fact that our country isn’t America anymore and despite attempts by the mainstream media and trolls stalking alternative news websites attempting to downplay videos like the ones below, we can see that America is quickly becoming Iraq or Afghanistan as country-wide preparation for a massive event is now being taken to the next level.
In the 1st video below just released by Felipe Soto we see a National Guard drill taking place in the residential streets of Ontario, California while in the 2nd video below we see a US Veteran getting pulled over by a TANK (no, it’s an armored personnel carrier according to the police officer and the TROLLS who stalk alternative news sites) seeking to divert our attention from the obvious – it’s a vehicle of war on the streets of America.
The recent email sent to All News Pipeline from a deep background source seen below shares of another event that recently happened in Yuma, Arizona and begs us to ask the question, has Jade Helm 15 already begun? Is the massive exposure of various martial law-style ‘drills’ across the country by the alternative media causing the NWO to accelerate their plans for a full-scale police-state crackdown prior to the rest of the country awakening and DEMANDING that these be stopped? This new Intellihub story tells us that the federal government is now actively seeking ‘role players’ for simulating the relocation of US citizens to detention camps in Phoenix, Arizona. Are all of these events that are now happening in these ‘Jade Helm 15’ states just a coincidence or a very clear pattern? The answer is clear to us.
ANP, I was at a friends home for dinner last night and a guest had something very interesting to say about his trip home Yuma, AZ Friday. He stopped at a rest area on I-8 before getting on I-10 to Phoenix. When he was coming out of the restroom he was surprised to see the parking lot filling up with unmarked vehicles which he first thought were border patrol. There were 3 helicopters not far in the desert and the men from the vehicles had blow horns ordering everyone to stay in their cars. He said they were dressed in desert camo fatigues and were not border patrol. I asked everyone if they heard of Jade Helm 15 and no one had. So, I told them to look it up and they all did. The guest that witnessed the incident looked up with a stunned look on his face and said that was a military operation he saw. Looks to me we are much closer and Jade Helm 15 is in motion.
To the government trolls who stalk ANP daily, can you really say these exercises are just ‘normal’ National Guard training? These ‘exercises’ are clearly another attempt to ‘normalize’ Americans seeing the military on the streets and look more like what we’d see in a police-state dictatorship than in a ‘free country’.
Is this really what we want all future generations to face when being pulled over by police in America? Is this normal or more proof that the war has come home to America? It seems to us to be a blatant attempt at citizen intimidation, total overkill.
The following stories found at the links included below should be enough to convince any American that our country and Rights are now being dismantled on a massive scale. Please share this information far and wide.
“Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire; your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.”

Why Is WalMart Mysteriously Shuttering Stores Nationwide For “Plumbing Issues”?
Tyler Durden’s pictureSubmitted by Tyler Durden on 04/15/2015 19:25 -0400
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-04-15/why-walmart-mysteriously-shuttering-stores-nationwide-plumbing-issues
Earlier this year, WalMart became one of several corporate heavyweights to lift wages for its meagerly compensated workers, around 500,000 of which are now set to receive at least $9/hour and $10/hour by Q1 2016 (that of course assumes they make it on $9 an hour for another 12 months and don’t seek out other employment by sheer necessity).
Meanwhile, as we noted earlier this month, the move by the country’s largest retailer to pay a few extra pennies to its (basically) minimum wage employees comes at a cost to the company’s suppliers because when you operate on the thinnest of margins in order to be the “low price leader,” someone has to pay for those wage hikes and you can’t pass along the costs to customers because many of your low-income patrons are operating from the same tax bracket as your low-paid employees. As such, the poor companies along the supply chain are forced to lower their prices and of course they’re going to comply because well, you’re WalMart meaning you’re your vendors’ biggest account pretty much by default. The outcome is that “while WMT (or MCD or GAP or Target) boosts the living standards of its employees by the smallest of fractions, it cripples the cost and wage structure of the entire ecosystem of vendors that feed into it, and what takes place is a veritable avalanche effect where a few cent increase for the lowest paid megacorp employees results in a tidal wave of layoffs for said megacorp’s vendors.”
If that doesn’t turn out to be enough in the face of an economy which isn’t really recovering and in which low-income shoppers are constrained by lackluster (and by that we mean nonexistent) wage growth, some sacrifices may have to be made. The problem is that laying people off and shuttering stores two months after a celebrated wage hike initiative doesn’t inspire much confidence and could turn into a PR issue, but one thing you could do is get creative, and while we’re not plumbers, we do find it curious that five geographically distinct WalMart stores have been closed in the past week for “ongoing plumbing issues that will require extensive repairs.”
Here’s more from a local CBS affiliate:
And here’s more from a local ABC report in Florida:
So there you have it, “clogs and water leaks” but no plumbing permits and 2,000 affected employees, many of whom were presumably just given the news that they would be getting a raise only to discover that they will get 60 days of pay before they’ll need to find a job at another WalMart location (hopefully one with no plumbing issues) or find other employment. We’ll leave it to readers to discern if these “clogs and leaks” are real or whether the company is just quietly shutting down stores across the country.

US Special Forces In Yemen Take Over American Walmart Stores
By: Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Western Subscribers
An intriguing Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) report circulating in the Kremlin today is expressing puzzlement as to why the United States top Special Forces command, that is currently directing the war in Yemen against Houthi rebel forces, has this past week taken over a number of Walmart stores in America and is now converting them to Command and Control (C2) Centres.
According to this report, SVR electronic intelligence analysts tasked with overseeing their American counterparts this past week indentified a series of mysterious communications between the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM), located at MacDill Air Force Base (MCF) in Tampa, Florida, their subservient counterpart located at the US Naval Expeditionary Base Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti (where the war in Yemen is being directed from), and…of all places…from a suddenly closed Walmart store in Brandon, Florida just 20 kilometers (13 miles) from their main headquarters.
In following these SOCOM communications, this report says, a further strangeness was discovered when C2 links were also found existing between the, likewise, suddenly closed Walmart store in Pico Rivera, California and the massive US Marine base Camp Pendleton located 119 kilometers (74.0 miles) apart…a suddenly closed Walmart store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the Tulsa Air National Guard Base (TANGB) located 16 kilometers (10 miles) apart…a suddenly closed Walmart store in North Midland, Texas, and Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, located 416 kilometers (259 miles) apart…a suddenly closed Walmart store in Livingston, Texas, and the highly secretive US Homeland Security base located at the Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base (EFJRB) in Houston, Texas, located 119 kilometers (74 miles) apart.
As to why all of these Walmart stores spanning the entire length of the United States were suddenly closed, this report continues, US news sources are reporting that they all mysteriously experienced the exact same plumbing problem…but which local news sources, from California to Florida, quickly discounted as being not true.
More ominous, however, of the sudden closing of these Walmart stores, this report states, is their location in what has been described as the “main combat target zone” of a massive SOCOM military exercise planned for the United States called “Jade Helm”, whose ending in September (coincidentally?) exactly coincides with the 6 month date all of these stores have stated they will remain closed for until they reopen.
To the massive “Jade Helm” military exercise itself, this report continues, it is an 8-week US domestic battle plan scheduled to begin on 15 July, and last until 15 September, encompassing the US States of California (mostly friendly but with an “insurgent pocket”), Utah (enemy State), Arizona (friendly State), Nevada (friendly State), Colorado (friendly State), New Mexico (neutral State), Texas (enemy State), Mississippi (not designated) and Florida (not designated). [Note: Mississippi and Florida were late additions to this military exercise.]
And according to the unclassified Request to Conduct Realistic Training—JADE HELM 15 (RCRT-JH15) posted by SOCOM describing this massive domestic military exercise they further state about it:
“This is a challenging eight-week joint military and interagency (IA) unconventional warfare (UW) exercise conducted throughout Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado.
The seven states and divided regions therein are designated as hostile, permissive, uncertain (leaning hostile) and uncertain (leaning friendly), with, for example, California designated as a largely blue (permissive) region with a small portion of the south in red (hostile) based on insurgent activity in the area. Here is a graphic of the exercise’s geographic layout.
Exercise participants come from across the Department of Defense and U.S. government, and include U.S. Army Special Forces Command (Green Berets), U.S. Navy SEALs, U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command, U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations Command, U.S. Marine Corps Expeditionary Units, 82nd Airborne Division and some interagency partners (likely, but not confirmed: FBI, CIA, DHS and others).
The RCRT states upfront the goals that the exercise hopes to accomplish: to improve the unconventional warfare capability of U.S. special operations forces as part of the national security strategy, and to determine the pros and cons associated with the exercise.”
Left unsaid/unanswered by SOCOM, or any other US authority, this report asks, is why the American militaries special forces and domestic intelligence/security agencies even need to conduct such an exercise as the United States (people/society/transportation/etc.) is so unique that the only information that could possibly be gained is in how to subjugate/suppress their own citizens as the knowledge gained could not possibly apply to any other nation on Earth?
Even more grimly to note about this “Jade Helm” “adventure”, SVR intelligence analysts in this report state, are that SOCOM forces are apparently honing the tactics they will soon be using against their own citizens in America…including mass starvation…in Yemen.
The reason(s) for this being so, they continue explaining, is due to both Yemen and the United States having the largest per capita ratio of privately owned guns in the world, a situation which has enabled both of these nations to be deemed “unconquerable” by Federation war experts.
But to the greatest (potential) horror of what SOCOM’s “Jade Helm” is really about, this report grimly concludes, can be heard in the words of the late US Army Veteran and FBI informant, Larry Grathwohl, who in 1982 described in chilling detail the Obama regimes “fellow travelers” logistical master plan to kill tens of millions of Americans….and by using these closed Walmart stores as C2 centres to weed them out would certainly be something they could do.
So the short and sweet synopsis is that it will be a flat out NAZI style take over and civil war if necessary. After that has been accomplished it will be off to a brain washing center for those sheeple who are left and comply.
There will be those who will be taken out immediately whilst others will be taken for re-education, out of those who still do not respond then these will also be eliminated. There is to be no deviation from the next Zeusian system of tyranny! Do not blame the United States for any troubles within the U.S. instead blame New Venice and American treasonous traitors such as John McCain.

Very interesting Wal Mart investigation by the MSM (ABC news)
1. The Midland Texas location was in the top 10 Wal Marts nationwide. Closing this was a major event, we are not talking crusty strip mall locations with these closures.
2. When Midland Texas closed, they had on that exact day freshly stocked the entire store with perishable goods that as a result went to waste.
3. Upon closing, the store produced records of 150 plumbing problems in the last year, but upon investigation, the last time Midland Texas ever had anything done was 3 years ago, with no plumbing repairs or problems noted since and even at that time 3 years ago all they did was install all new infrared flush sensors and infrared sink sensors.
4. IN ALL LOCATIONS, there were small stores not owned by Wal Mart renting space in the front of the Wal Mart, and without any warning they were all given five hours to leave. None of these locations ever knew of any plumbing problems or ever saw a plumber. Plumbing was not the original explanation given for closing the stores also
5. Not included in the ABC reports are: The Midland wal mart closing happened in the absolute richest part of town and it was an amazing Wal Mart.
6. There were other wal mart closings at the exact same time, but only the five stores originally mentioned ever got mentioned. This is bigger than what is being reported.
7. In many comment sections there are people who say they have union experience and some even worked in partially unionised wal marts and that these closures do not match the union scenario. Make of this what you will.

Did WalMart Close A California Store To Punish Employees Who Protested Wages And Working Conditions?
Tyler Durden’s pictureSubmitted by Tyler Durden on 04/17/2015

On Wednesday, we asked why WalMart simultaneously closed multiple geographically distinct stores across the US for “plumbing issues.” We began by noting that the company — the largest retailer in the world — raised wages across the board just two months ago. Here’s an excerpt from the letter sent to employees by President and CEO Doug McMillon:
We went on to point out that there is no free lunch especially when you operate on razor thin margins in order to retain the “low price leader” crown and so someone has to pay for all those extra pennies the company is now paying out to its employees and because passing along the costs to customers is a no-go, the supply chain has to foot the bill, and because of WalMart’s size, vendors have no choice but to cooperate. WalMart is legendary for its supply chain management, but as WSJ notes, the company is finding it more difficult to maintain its competitive advantage and must figure out how to retain its leadership position in the market all while striking a conciliatory tone on wages:
It’s against this backdrop that the company recently began closing stores and laying off thousands of employees citing “ongoing plumbing issues that will require extensive repairs.” Once we discovered that no plumbing permits had been filed and that seemingly none of the affected workers could offer even a shred of anecdotal evidence as to the existence of the “clogs and leaks” WalMart officials claimed were at the heart of the problem, we suggested that perhaps — just perhaps — something else might be behind the store closures such as the company’s desire to cut costs in a tough economic and competitive environment. Here’s a list of the affected stores:
1620 W. Church St. Livingston, TX
4517 N Midland Dr. Midland, TX
207 S. Memorial Dr. Tulsa, OK
8500 Washington Blvd. Pico Rivera, CA
1208 E. Brandon Blvd. Tampa, FL
When we began to look into each of these locations we came across something rather interesting involving the Pico Rivera, CA store. As it turns out, it’s been the site of wage and working condition protests on a number of occasions, the most recent of which was less than six months ago. Here’s more via local news footage:
Almost exactly one year earlier, the Pico Rivera store was (along with multiple other locations across the US) the site of protests alleging that the company did not pay enough to keep many of its workers from seeking government assistance to supplement their meager wages (recall that 73% of those receiving public assistance in the US come from working families). Here was the scene at Pico Rivera in November of 2013:
And just a little over a year before the 2013 Black Friday protests, more than 200 workers at Pico Rivera went on strike and protested in front of the store waving signs that read “On Strike for the Freedom to Speak Out,” suggesting the company was retaliating against those who fought for better wages and working conditions.
Here’s what The NY Times had to say at the time of the October 14, 2012 walkout:
Then, one month later in November of 2012, the same workers planned a similar demonstration against what some called “degrading” circumstances. Here’s a visual from that event:
Given the history at the Pico Rivera location, one could be forgiven for suggesting the store closure could very well have more to do with employees’ views on wages, working conditions, and retaliation than it does with “clogs, leaks, and plumbing issues.”
What’s especially interesting here is that one of the groups which has consistently backed protests at the Pico Rivera store is the The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union or, UFCW. The group posted the following video to its website during the 2014 “Pico Rivera Sit Down Strike”:

The UFCW has a history with the company. Back in 2004, when workers at the Jonquiere, Quebec location voted to join the organization, WalMart closed the store six months later noting that “you can’t take a store that is a struggling store anyway and add a bunch of people and a bunch of work rules.” This case ended up before the Supreme Court in Canada and just last year, the high court ruled against the company (the full decision is embeded below). Here’s more on that via ThinkProgress:
So here is a WalMart location which has staged protests each and every year dating back to at least 2012, the latest of which led to two dozen arrests and these protests are backed by the same organization which was involved in a Canadian Supreme Court case against the company for closing a store where workers had agreed to adopt the UFCW as their representative. While there may or may not be any connection to all of this and the Pico Rivera location’s “plumbing issues,” we would note that several people are beginning to draw a parallel. One manager at the store told a local CBS affiliate the following on Thursday:
Yes, a sewer issue at WalMart, which is something one would think WalMart plumbing technician Codi Bauer would know something about. This is what he told a local reporter in Florida:
So that is the short history of the Pico Rivera WalMart location where hundreds of employees were laid off as part of the company’s mysterious nationwide “plumbing” problem. We again leave it for readers to decide whether WalMart — in an attempt to kill two birds with one stone by eliminating a “problem” store while simultaneously giving an incremental boost to a nationwide cost cutting effort —created a problem which didn’t really exist as an excuse to shut the doors, or whether somewhere, deep beneath the now empty California location, the pipes are truly clogged up and leaking.
Pico Rivera has not received any building repair permit requests from the company.

Then, just this afternoon, this comes across the wires (Via Reuters):
Expect more “plumbing.”

WalMart Workers Take “Plumbing” Mystery To Labor Board

Last week, we documented the mysterious case of WalMart’s move to shutter multiple geographically distinct locations across the US for “plumbing issues.” According to the company, five locations need extensive repairs to fix “clogs and leaks,” a situation which purportedly necessitates that the stores be closed and all workers be laid off (unless of course they can find “placement” at another WalMart location).
That sounded suspect to us and our interest was piqued once we discovered that in fact, no plumbing permits had been issued for work on any one of the shuttered stores. Our contention was that the retailer, facing pressure to retain its “low price leader” title, may be using leaky pipes as an excuse to quietly close stores as it seeks to cut costs in the face of pressure on its margins from a recent across the board wage hike.
Once we dug a bit deeper into the history of the affected stores we noticed that one store in particular — the Pico Rivera, CA location — has been at the forefront of wage and working condition protests for the better part of three years. In fact, employees at the Pico Rivera store staged strikes, pickets, and walkouts in October and November of 2012, in November of 2013, and most recently in November of last year, with the latter episode culminating in the arrest of some two dozen workers. Furthermore, these demonstrations were supported by The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union or, UFCW, which coincidentally dealt the company a bitter defeat in Canada’s Supreme Court last year in the culmination of a decade-old dispute which began when WalMart closed a location in Quebec after workers voted to adopt UFCW as their representative.
Given all of this, and given the company’s efforts to cut costs in the face of pressure to raise wages for its low-paid employees, it didn’t seem entirely unreasonable to ask the following question: Did WalMart close a California store to punish employees who protested wages and working conditions?
Sure enough, the UFCW on behalf of the 2,200 or so employees that have been laid off nationwide is reportedly set to file a National Labor Relations Board claim today seeking an injunction that would require the company to rehire all of the affected workers and alleging that WalMart did indeed close the Pico Rivera location in retaliation for workers’ long-standing position on wages, working conditions, and, ironically, retaliatory actions against employees who raised concerns to management.
