Poland to declassify materials on 2010 presidential plane crash in Smolensk

Polish Defense Minister Antoni Macierewicz announced Thursday that archive materials relating to the 2010 plane crash near the Russian city of Smolensk that killed then-President Lech Kaczynski and dozens of high-level figures will be declassified. “Do not expect that the commission will point to the culprits, because it is not the task of this committee, only an indication of what factors and events led to this tragedy,” Sputnik quoted Macierewicz as saying. The commission appointed to investigate the crash has said that “there were serious shortcomings in a report on the crash drafted by the previous government.” The Moscow-based Interstate Aviation Committee said earlier that the flight crew’s decision not to reroute the plane to an alternative aerodrome led to the crash.
