MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The lower house of the Polish parliament, the Sejm, on Friday adopted new regulations that widen powers of country’s security service, parliament’s press service said in a statement Friday.

“The project specifies rules for the application of operational control by the security services… The document clarifies the means and methods that would regulate operational control,” the statement said.

The statement added that security services would get access to phone conversations of citizens and their online communications if such information was necessary for investigations.

At the same time, the operational control activities should be approved by the district court, according to the statement.

New regulations were supported by 234 lawmakers, while 213 opposed them, however, they need to be approved by country’s president and the upper house of Parliament to come into effect.

Polish authorities have recently adopted a set of controversial media and constitutional court laws, which had been widely criticized both in Poland and abroad.
