Presidential elections with armed operation in Eastern Ukraine arouse concern – Russian envoy to UN

The environment in which the Ukrainian elections will take place arouses concern, Russian ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin has said.

“We are open. President Putin has said that it is a step in the right direction but these should be proper elections, of course. I personally don’t see how some people can say that they are proper elections when a military operation continues in Eastern Ukraine,” Churkin said to reporters on Wednesday.

“What we see is a very unequivocal situation. I believe we should be judging after the elections. Let’s see what happens on May 25 and express our attitude after that,” Churkin said.

Members of the UN Security Council did not support Russia’s proposal to appeal to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to conduct an independent investigation of the May 2 tragedy in Odessa, Russian ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin has said.

“Unfortunately, Security Council members were unprepared to support our address to the Secretary General on the need for an independent study,” Churkin said to reporters after a closed session of the Security Council discussing Ukraine.

Russia has pulled out its troops from the border with Ukraine, and those who haven’t seen this apparently don’t want to see this, Russian Permanent Representative at the UN Vitaly Churkin said.

“Who wants to see, they’ll see. This is a political issue,” Churkin told journalists following a UN Security Council closed session on Ukraine on Wednesday.

“The Russian troops have been withdrawn from the borders with Ukraine, just as President Putin announced earlier,” he said. Russian

President Vladimir Putin had said earlier that Russia had pulled back its troops from the Ukrainian borders to their permanent bases. However, the US and NATO have said they did not see signs of the Russian troop pullout, Interfax reports.
