The historic meeting will be the first time a member of the Sinn Féin party leadership has met with a member of the British royal family in the Republic of Ireland.Martin McGuinness will also be meeting the prince and he himself has already met Queen Elizabeth in 2012 in Northern Ireland in his role as Deputy First Minister and the two shook hands, a historic moment in the British-Irish relationship.

Declan Kearney, the chairman of Sinn Féin, has welcomed the meeting and believes it is another positive step of healing historic wounds. He said, “This was agreed to promote the process of resolving past injustices and promoting reconciliation and healing.”

Gerry Adams has praised the work of both sides in making the handshake between Martin McGuinness and the Queen a reality, but he is also aware of the history and the effects of the conflict. He said “Prince Charles is the colonel-in-chief of the Parachute Regiment – a regiment of the British army that has been responsible for the killing of many Irish citizens including in Derry, Ballymurphy, Springhill and other communities across the north…But he also has been bereaved by the actions of republicans.”

Adams has always been a key player in the peace process and he is very wary that the delicate peace process needs to remain along the path of peace. Adams is thankful that “the conflict is over, but there remain unresolved injustices. These must be rectified and a healing process developed…there is a responsibility on us all to promote reconciliation and seek to promote healing.”

The Prince of Wales and Gerry Adams will meet in Galway.
