Relations with Russia extremely important for Moldova

Relations with Russia are extremely important for Moldova, says Moldovan Prime Minister Iurie Leanca. “Moldova wants to have constructive and pragmatic relations based on mutual respect with Russia,” Leanca said at a joint press conference with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy in Chisinau on Tuesday. Asked by journalists to comment on Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin’s recent visit to Tiraspol, Leanca said that, “according to the Russian embassy information, that visit was private.”

The premier said he hoped he would have the chance to speak with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev at a meeting of the CIS prime ministers in Minsk on May 30 to discuss “the entire spectrum of problems in relations between the two countries, including the so-called incident involving the Russian delegation in Chisinau.” “We believe that relations with Moscow are extremely important for Chisinau.

We hope that, for Moscow, relations with Moldova are also constructive and pragmatic and are based on mutual respect. Therefore, it would be desirable to stop communication solely through Twitter and Facebook. I am sure we need a dialogue,” Leanca said.

“I’d like to stress that we are interested in respectful treatment and a civilized and constructive dialogue with Russia,” he said. Visiting Tiraspol on May 9, Rogozin said Russia would do everything as a guarantor of security of the unrecognized Transdniestrian Moldovan Republic. The next day, on May 10, Romania and Ukraine closed their airspace to the plane carrying a Russian delegation headed by Rogozin, with which it was returning to Moscow.
Alexei Zhuravlyov, a member of the delegation and a State Duma deputy, told Interfax later that over 30,000 signatures of Transdniestrian residents supporting accession to Russia were seized from the plane, whose departure was delayed in Chisinau. The Moldovan authorities later confirmed the seizure of the signatures from the plane.
