Forensic experts have positively identified the remains of at least one of the 43 Mexican students who went missing in September.

The remains were identified from among a set of charred remains that were found in a landfill, said an official on Saturday.

“One of the pieces (of bones) belongs to one of the students,” the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

According to a family member, the identified remains belong to Alexander Mora.

On September 26, the 43 student teachers disappeared in the southern city of Iguala in Guerrero following an attack by police forces suspected of having links to drug gangs. The incident took place during a protest over teachers’ rights.

Violent protests have erupted in Mexico ever since officials announced that members of the Guerreros Unidos drug cartel had confessed to killing the young men and burning their remains after receiving them from corrupt police officers.
