Russia denies the US claim that Moscow has agreed to increase intelligence sharing with Washington over the ISIL Takfiri terrorists rampaging in Iraq and Syria.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry made the announcement in a Thursday statement, which contradicted comments made by US Secretary of State John Kerry after a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, on Tuesday.

The statement said Moscow would not join “any ‘coalition’ set up without the backing of the UN Security Council and that violates international law.”

Washington has scrapped a bilateral commission involving the two countries that aimed to help contain terrorism, the ministry added, noting that Moscow is already giving “significant help” to Syria and Iraq and would carry on doing so.

Kerry said on Tuesday that he and the Russian foreign minister had agreed “to intensify intelligence cooperation with respect to ISIL and other counter-terrorism challenges,” during a meeting in Paris.

He added that he had talked to Lavrov about “whether Russia could do more to support Iraqi security forces,” fighting against the militants.

The rejection comes as Washington has imposed tough sanctions on Russia, accusing the country of destabilizing Ukraine. Moscow, however, rejects the accusation and has imposed retaliatory punitive measures.

The two countries are also at odds over the crisis in Syria, with Moscow supporting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Washington is currently leading a coalition of Western and Arab countries carrying out an air campaign against the ISIL terrorists, who are in control of parts of Syria and Iraq and have committed widespread acts of violence there.
