“At the night of Sunday, April 20, the Easter armistice was broken in Slavyansk. The attack of the armed militants from the so-called Right Sector claimed lives of innocent civilians… The Russian side is indignant at this provocation of the militants, which proves Kiev’s authorities are not willing to control and disarm the nationalists and extremists,”

said the Russian Foreign Ministry April 20, as reported by the official ITAR-Tass agency.

“Russia insists on Ukraine’s strict observance of the obligations it has undertaken to de-escalate the situation in Ukraine’s south-eastern regions,”
Russia’s foreign ministry said, commenting on the events in Slavyansk, where militants from the Right Sector had breached the Easter armistice.

“We are surprised the tragedy happened already after signing on April 17 in Geneva the statement of the four-sided meeting featuring representatives of Russia, the U.S., the EU, and Ukraine, which contains the urge to refrain from any force actions, threats and provocations,”
the foreign ministry said.

“The Russian side is indignant at this provocation of the militants, which proves Kiev’s authorities are not willing to control and disarm the nationalists and extremists,”
the foreign ministry said, adding that the local people found in the attackers’ cars weapons, maps of the region, and symbols of the Right Sector.

MSN/UK reported 6 deaths at a protesters’ checkpoint near Slovyansk after an armed overnight raid. A little earlier, RT reported five deaths, three of them protesters and two attackers, and the protesters’ claim that the two attackers were from Right Sector, breaking the Easter truce and the Geneva agreement, and underlining Lavrov’s warning after the Geneva agreement Thursday, that the fascists of Right Sector must be disarmed.

The checkpoint was manned by 26 civilians armed only with bats. They carried no firearms because of the “Easter truce.” After they were attacked, their defense was joined by 20 protesters with firearms.

Later on Sunday the protesters claimed they had detained one of the perpetrators who confessed he was from Right Sector, and had found a medallion with Right Sector symbols. Right Sector spokesman Artem Skoropadsky denied the group was involved. Later on Sunday, the Ukrainian security service claimed that it had investigated the incident and that “no Ukrainian group” was involved.

In a change in the pattern of U.S. major media coverage of events in Ukraine, both ABC and CNN covered the event as an attack by Right Sector.
