Scientists Find Oxygen-Rich Conditions Halt Spread of Breast Cancer

Cancer cells are abnormal cells that grow and multiply uncontrollably. But they are far more complex than that simple statement. It’s this complex nature of cancer cells that makes a cancer diagnosis so troubling and the treatment options largely limited. One new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicates low-oxygen levels could be to blame for the spread of at least one type of cancer, giving scientists clues to more effective treatments.

According to the researchers from Johns Hopkins University, low oxygen levels within cancer cells trigger the increased production of two proteins—RhoA and ROCK1. These proteins are known to give cancer cells movement and the ability to easily spread.

Studying breast cancer cells, the scientists explained that when cancer cells spread, they undergo a number of physical changes to make such movement possible. This includes the production of “filaments” and “hands” allowing them to contract and reach, pulling themselves along and latching onto other surfaces.

RhoA and ROCK1 are known to play an important role in the production of these filaments and hands. Until this study, it was largely unknown what caused the levels of these proteins to be high. Now, however, they have a clue.

Dr. Gregg Semenza of Johns Hopkins says,

“As tumor cells multiply, the interior of the tumor begins to run out of oxygen because it isn’t being fed by blood vessels. The lack of oxygen activates the hypoxia-inducible factors, which are master control proteins that switch on many genes that help cells adapt to the scarcity of oxygen.”

Further, these changes allow the cancer cells to break away from the centralized tumor, where they can reach the blood vessels and spread throughout the body.

Breast cancer cells exposed to low oxygen levels had significantly more movement than those with normal oxygen levels when tested in the lab. These low-oxygen breast cancer cells had far more hands and filaments than the others.

The study’s co-author Daniele Gilkes goes on to say,

“We have successfully decreased the mobility of breast cancer cells in the lab by using genetic tricks to knock the hypoxia-inducible factors down. Now that we understand the mechanism at play, we hope that clinical trials will be performed to test whether drugs that inhibit hypoxia-inducible factors will have the double effect of blocking production of RhoA and ROCK1 and preventing metastases in women with breast cancer.”

    It amazes me how something can be found out and proven decades ago by great men and only today do the so-called experts find minor parts of the whole out. So for instance if you go back to the 1920s you will find a man called Otto Heinrich Warburg of great interest, of course his information is suppressed today. We do not just want to halt the spread of cancer but we want to attack the cancer and we can do this by using singlet oxygen (one part oxygen) such as ozone or hydrogen peroxide therapies. I strongly suggest people study the Polyatomic Apheresis method of ozone treatment because the medical mafia detest this with a passion and when they detest something you know it works! Lets not forget how we can use high alkalinity treatments such as IV sodium bicarbonate to remove the cancer.
