LONDON, January 12 (Sputnik) — Leader of UK Labour Party Ed Miliband may support a British entry ban that applies to Russian individuals allegedly involved in the so-called Magnitsky case, the Telegraph reported Monday.
“Mr Miliband is now considering plans to block a ring of Russian judges and tax officials from entering Britain after discussing the proposals at a dinner with the Clooneys at the London mansion of a leading barrister… The Labour leader was briefed on proposals to implement a ‘Magnitsky law’ over a private meal with the Hollywood actor and his wife, Amal, the human rights lawyer,” the Telegraph reported.
In July 2013, British Member of Parliament Dominic Raab stated that the United Kingdom had already imposed an entry ban on 60 Russian individuals associated with the Magnitsky case. However, later British Home Affairs Ministry claimed that Raab’s statement was wrong, adding that each visa application from Russian tax officials and judges will be considered individually.
In December 2012, the US Senate passed the Magnitsky Act, which allowed Washington to deny visas and freeze the assets of Russian officials allegedly involved in the death of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky.
Magnitsky died in a pre-trial detention center after almost a year after he was accused of conspiracy and abatement in serious company tax evasion by a group of individuals.
Russia has responded to the Magnitsky Act by issuing its own blacklist, which includes US officials linked to human rights violations at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.
According to the opinion poll conducted by the Populus in January, 37 percent of the respondents will vote for the Labour Party has the next UK general election in May 2015, while 32 percent support the ruling, Conservative Party.
