A new survey has disclosed that more than 4 in 10 British schoolgirls say they have been coerced into sex.

The research was conducted by the Universities of Bristol and Central Lancashire and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Child.

It has also been known that England has the highest rates of teenage sexual coercion among four European countries polled including Bulgaria, Cyprus, Italy and Norway.

The research study comprised a school-based survey of 4,500 children and 100 interviews with young people across the five countries, the Guardian reported.

The survey also reveals that 1 in 5 British schoolgirls aged between 13 and 17 has suffered physical violence or intimidation.

Dr Christine Barter, an NSPCC senior research fellow has blamed the problem on lack of support for young children.

“Our research findings show that across Europe violence and abuse, both offline and online, in young people’s relationships constitutes a major problem, yet in most countries it remains unrecognized, leaving young people with little support or appropriate services,” she noted.
