In their latest operation, Syrian soldiers have evacuated over 2,000 people from areas besieged by militants near the capital Damascus.

As many as 2,112 people were evacuated from Douma, Joubar, al-Shifouniyeh, Mida’a, Hawsh al-Fara, Hawsh al-Dawahra, and Hawsh Nasra in the eastern Ghouta region, Syria’s official news agency SANA reported on Sunday.

Some 1,094 children and 639 women were among the evacuees.

The families took shelter in a military post near Hawsh al-Fara in Douma, where they received urgent requirements. They are expected to be relocated to temporary housing centers.

Sunday’s operation came a day after the army secured a safe passage for 1,687 people, including, 824 children and 494 women, out of the city of Douma in the Ghouta region.

Earlier, Syrian troops had managed to get 160 citizens out of Douma farms.

Over the past months, Syrian soldiers have made numerous gains in the battle against the foreign-sponsored militants, inflicting heavy losses on them in several areas.

Syria has been grappling with a deadly conflict since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of over 200,000 people, according to reports.

Over 7.2 million Syrians have also become internally displaced due to the ongoing Syrian crisis, according to the UN.
