A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of carrying out cyberattacks on websites “around the world” and for bomb hoaxes made against airlines in North America.

The teen from Plymouth has been charged with alleged denial of service attacks on websites on four continents. The bomb hoaxes were carried out on social media, police said.

A police spokesperson said no more information, including the time of the attacks and websites targeted, could be released at this stage.

Devon and Cornwall police said the boy had been charged with three offences under the Computer Misuse Act.

“The 15-year-old, from the Plympton area of the city, was charged on Monday 16th November after an investigation by officers from the Operation Zephyr Regional Cyber Crime Unit,” a statement read.

“The boy was charged with three offences under Section 3 of the Computer Misuse Act which relate to denial of service attacks on websites at locations in Europe, North America, Africa and Asia”.

He was also charged under the Criminal Law Act for bomb threats made against North American airlines.

The teen has been bailed and will appear in youth court on December 18.
