Dozens of people have been killed and several others wounded in the latest wave of bombings and shooting attacks across Iraq.

A terrorist group affiliated with the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has executed 16 of its members for withdrawing from the flashpoint city of Fallujah.

Security sources say the incident took place in the city of Jurf al-Sakhar on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Iraqi army and police forces have been battling militants who took over parts of the city of Ramadi in Anbar Province and the nearby city of Fallujah in December.

Anbar Province plunged into violence in December 2013, when the army removed an anti-government protest camp in Ramadi. Authorities said the camp was used as “headquarters for the leadership of al-Qaeda.”

The turmoil has inflicted severe damage on infrastructure and forced nearly 400,000 people to flee their homes.

Meanwhile, nearly 20 people were killed in a series of blasts targeting several towns in the north of the capital, Baghdad, on Saturday.

Police say the deadliest attack happened in the town of Dujail after an explosive-laden car ripped through a security checkpoint.

Iraq is currently witnessing a wave of attacks unprecedented in recent years. Based on official figures, over 1,000 people, mostly civilians, lost their lives in attacks across Iraq in April.
