WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Chicago Teachers Union has staged a strike for April 1 to protest against grim outlook for schools and colleges in the city.
The rally dubbed “April 1 Day of Action” is expected to attract thousands of teachers, who want to pressure local authorities to address financial issues of the city’s school system.
The tentative schedule of events includes school picketing, rallies and marches, according to a Facebook page designed by the protesters.
The Teachers Union has argued that its “adversaries,” who include Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, have been calling for school and university closings, budget cuts, as well as lower wages.
The teachers’ demands include progressive taxation and the release of the tax-increment financing surplus.
