The United States government has confiscated hundreds of thousands of taxpayers over the past three years because of a debt they never knew about – often a debt incurred by their parents, a report reveals.

The Treasury Department has intercepted $1.9 billion in tax refunds already this year, The Washington Post reported Friday.

Of the figure, $75 million were intercepted on debts delinquent for more than 10 years, the report said, citing Jeffrey Schramek, assistant commissioner of the department’s debt management service.

The government’s effort to collect old debts started three years ago.

A Social Security spokeswoman says the agency has not been involved in the aggressive effort, ask Treasury. Treasury says ask Congress, and Congressional staffers say the request probably came from the bureaucracy, the report said.

However, Social Security spokeswoman Dorothy Clark has said, “We have an obligation to current and future Social Security beneficiaries to attempt to recoup money that people received when it was not due,” according to the newspaper.

The Treasury Department has so far collected $424 million in debts that were more than 10 years old.

The Social Security Administration has found 400,000 taxpayers who collectively owe $714 million on debts more than 10 years old, the Post said. The agency expects to have begun proceedings against all of those people by this summer.

The Federal Trade Commission has said that “family members typically are not obligated to pay the debts of a deceased relative from their own assets,” according to the newspaper.

But Social Security officials argue that children must pay back the money their parents received, no matter how long ago any overpayment occurred.

Unless these nefarious bastards have a wet signature by the child as a guarantor for a loan or borrowing then they cannot ask for anything from the child for the parents loan actions. Do not let these swines think they can do as they please.
