WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States and Mexico will create a new joint clean energy and climate policy taskforce in an effort to fight climate change, the White House said in a statement.
“The two countries will launch a new high-level bilateral clean energy and climate policy task force to further deepen [climate] policy and regulatory coordination,” the statement, released on Friday, said.
The White House underscored that action on climate change and developing clean energy can drive economic growth as well as bring broad security, health and development benefits to both countries.
The United States and Mexico will cooperate in the areas of clean electricity, grid modernization, appliance standards and energy efficiency, the statement said.
Additionally, the two countries will promote more fuel-efficient automobile fleets, global and regional climate modelling, weather forecasting and early alerts system.
The interagency task force will be chaired by US Secretary Ernest Moniz and Mexican Secretary Juan Jose Guerra Abud, according to the statement.
“Working together, we can further the continent’s commitment to promote regional energy security, integration and competitiveness,” Moniz said in a press release on Friday.
The interagency task force will hold its first meeting in the Spring of 2015, the statement said.
