A political commentator says the United States and NATO have teamed up to wage a war with Russia over Ukraine to divert global attention from other developments, Press TV reports.

In an interview on Friday, Tony Gosling told Press TV that Washington and NATO are seeking to provoke Russia into a war over Ukraine to achieve certain objectives.

“I think the West and NATO maybe do want a war because then if they get a war, even a big one…[then] the Middle East stuff seems to be a sideshow for many years now,” Gosling said.

In case of a war, the analyst added, the Unite States and NATO “would then blame an economic crash, an economic crisis which is already brewing up here in the West on somebody else, on the war.”

Tensions between Russia and the West heightened after Crimea declared independence from Ukraine and became part of the Russian Federation following a referendum on March 16.

Meanwhile, pro-Russia demonstrations have been a common scene across eastern Ukrainian cities over the past weeks with protesters occupying state buildings in several towns and cities.

On April 17, Ukraine’s interim government together with the United States, Russia and the European Union reached an agreement in the Swiss city of Geneva, calling for all sides to ease the ongoing crisis in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine interim authorities in Kiev said on Friday that army units have begun the second phase of an operation to drive out pro-Russia activists from the eastern cities.
